Decent wax that wont break the bank and will last for a bit?

Featured Replies

Heyup all,

I currently give the car a good clean once a week or so, im not a detailer or anything, just like it kept clean and looked after. As such after washing the car i am just usng Autoglym AquaWax as part of the drying process to add a bit of protection and shine.

TBH it works quite well, beading is good and its quick and easy to apply. Not really durable but as it gets done on a weekly basis thats okay. The only really negative thing i can say about it is that it only really seems to last about 5 washes of the car and is ~£15 a pop.

With winter coming i dont want to be spending ages out in the cold working on the car. As such ive been considering using a more durable wax rather than just a "spray on wax" in the next few weeks to see me through a few months at a time.

A mate lent me some "Mer" stuff a while back and i thought it was a bit average tbh - beading was good but only lasted a couple of weeks, i ended up using nearly half the bottle getting around the car once and it took donkeys to apply, as such i cant see any Halfords jobbie doing what im looking for, so think i will have to dip my toe into the alien world of proper detailing

As such i was wondering if anyone had any reccomendations for a decent paste wax or similar that wont break the bank (about £15 would be ideal), will last a few weeks at a stretch, look good, and is easy to apply? Ive seen a lot of mention of Collonite etc. but dont really know where to start?

Cheers

Yep spot on - Collinite 476s, easy on , easy off and will last for a few months not weeks

Agree with collinite or as an alternative finish kare 1000p.

Collinite 476s lasts a long time! When applying, use a Megs applicator pads for even coverage. Feels a bit like you are applying candle wax (thats what it looks like in the tin :D) but the results are great. I put a thread up in this forum showing water dispersion with it. Beading is usually real good too!

I need some more soon. Will have to build up an order of £70! :D

Does the £70 free P&P come before or after the 10% discount. ;)

Another  for collinite 476...Just don't leave it on too long else it's a b*tch to get off!!

The Finish Kare 1000p looks like it might be the best buy for me, about the same price as the Collonite but you get about twice as much, plus i hear it doubles up well as a sealant for alloys and other bits and pieces.

My only query is that i'll be applying by hand, over the top of a Two bucket handwash and a coat of AG Super Resin Polish - i take it that shouldnt pose any issues?

Cheers

No issues at all

Ended up getting a bit if (i think) a bargain on ebay.

For £25 delivered i picked up a tin of Collinite 467S along with a 200g Bilt Hamber Soft Clay Bar, with a microfibre towel and an applicator pad.

The paint work is in fairly good nick at the moment, put some Aqua Wax on it after the last wash 2 and a bit weeks back and its still got a high gloss to it.

As such, i think if i can get a clear break in the weather this weekend i'll give it a good wash and SRP and then seal everything (including the alloys) with the Colly for winter.

Think i'll save the Clay bar for the spring time and then use it to help remove all the cack that will be picked up by what will no doubt turn out to be another awful winter.

Cheers guys

Sounds like a plan but I would seriously consider using the clay whilst the car is wet after washing. Worth cleansing that paint before attacking with SRP. :)

 deffo worth doing this before the SRP. If its a 200g monster clay bar, cut it in half

Whenever I clay my car I rarely have a piece of clay bigger than say 1cm diameter? when rolled in a ball? Often there is no need to use a huge bit. :) Means also I just throw it away afterwards as its usually all contaminated by then.

After not being impressed with 915 I have now moved to sealant and I use PB ex-p sealant and it works a treat!

Never used Colli 476, I'm a 915 man myself. Just done SWMBO's Ferbi with a coat ready for winter B)

I recently bought some collnite 845 for my alloys, but no one's mentioned it for body work, is it not as good as collinite 476

edit: just seen poster above, so there's 915 as well, i'm confused with all these numbers? what's the difference between them?

Collinte 845 and 476 are basically the same wax. 845 is liquid, 476 a solid. There are people that use 875 on bodywork, but it seems a bit of a waste to me...It's easy to apply the 476 on bodywork where as the 845 comes into its own on intricate wheels etc where it's no so easy to apply a wax.

Collinite 915 has a lot more Carnauba in it's mix...so the shine will be deeper than 476/845

collinite web site, loads of info

thanks for the information and link

i'll have a look at 915 when my meguairs carnuba wax and autoglym gloss protection runs out

thanks again

I might look into a tin of 915 as I will need some soon. I still love the 476. On a silver car I haven't found many differences in any kind of wax I have used.

Seems like 915 would be brilliant on black magic paint.

can you really notice the difference between 915 and 845, how do they compare with other stuff like meguar's or autoglym stuff

can i use collinite wax on top of another brand of wax

I've used 915 on my Black Magic Octavia and it is indeed brilliant. Still beading after 3 months. Just needs a good going over again for winter.

Got the 845 of ebay thanks to this thread - bloody brilliant! On & off really easy.

off easy? I want it to stay on!

i must say it's quite oily stuff compared to what i've been using before

Point taken but you know what I mean? B) I'd done my alloys last weekend & the rest of the car yesterday. The alloys cleaned up really easy yestreday.
