4x4 140 dsg or 170 dsg

Featured Replies

Hi I am a newbie and as of yet do no town a skoda just looking a order my next company car. Currently stands at superb 170 elegance dsg but not sure whether to go fofor the 140 4 x4 dsg instead. do es any any one have any comments.

looking at 170 for power, curently drive audi a6 lemand avant 170 manual, have test drove 140 manual and was very impressed. looking at 4x4 140 as will be purchasing caravan next year.

has anyone tuned their remapped their 140 if so was there a huge difference?

thanks

If you only tow a caravan at summertime, it doesn`t make much difference whether you have 2wd or 4wd. But if you live on area that has a real winter, with or without caravan, then 4wd is better. So it depends.....

Swill51,

Just a note on remapping... Any turbodiesel remapped should produce 20/ 25% more torque and BHP. You should see a very marked improvement in throttle response and acceleration.

And don`t forget to say goodbye to the car`s guarantee also....unless that remapping is approved by skoda....which it obviously isn`t......

Thanks for responses.

4x4 seems sensible but would extra power of 170. is there that much difference between them, obviously 4x4 sloes it down but should make for better handling.

elegance is defo the levle but just now need to decide on variant. If go for 170 and get stuck would have wished I'd gone for 170 version, if go for 4x4 would wish I'd got the power of the 170, what a decision!!

Just had my MY 2012 140 DSG 4x4 done by Superchips and there is a noticeable improvement(£455)

For me I want 4x4 so I'll just remap it after I've put on a few thousand k's.

I had a remap in my PD140 VW for almost 5 years and it's been trouble free. This is the Superchips one where they give you a handset.

Unfortunatley the CR140 does not gain as much as the PD140 (judging by Superchips before/after dyno graphs). The bigger turbo on the CR170 allows much more scope for improvement.

You can remap the ECU using the original file names and Skoda would not be aware at time of service.

It is a requirement to let your insurance company know as this would be a performance modification.

If 140 dsg 4x4 had been around last year when I got mine, I would have done this. The manual box is very good, but in the Superb an auto is more in line with how I personally use it.

Cheers

I have a Yeti with the same CR140 engine, 4x4, DSG and a Shark Performance remap. Very impressive package. They also fitted a flappy paddle MFSW as well.

I didn't realise that the CR140DSG4x4 was available on the Superb now. I'm glad it is, but would prefer the CR170, or even a CR220emoticon-0136-giggle.gif

Unfortunately the newer ECU's used on these CR's cannot be remapped via the OBD port, they require the ECU to be physically opened up. emoticon-0106-crying.gif

Oh bugger. That means I have to get a local company to do it which will incur the traditional Australian "screw them to the wall" overcharging.

This was my dilema in June this year

In the end I decided that i'd probably only benefit from the 4wd for about 3 weeks of the year. Not sure how the 2wd auto will perform in the snow (having never driven an auto in the snow) but i'm sure it'll be fine.

Good luck making your decision!

I have the 140 4x4 DSG, and I am pretty happy with it. I am, however, considering a remap. I don´t really need it, but I kinda miss having more power. I am considering doing a MTM remap since MTM has a long history with VAG. They offer 170 hp and 380nm for the 140 4x4 DSG. The only reason why I´m holding back is my concern about voiding the warrenty.

I find the 4x4 very usefull though, but then again, I drive a lot on shabby, snow covered roads. Had my first icy road encounter for this season just last week, I kept trying to find the clutch during the understeer even tough I´ve had the car for almost a year... :giggle:

My local dealer specifically offered MTM as the "in-house" tuner. They're in the same building complex and strongest argument was that it's officially done and warranty is valid.

Thanks for all info!

Fimally made a decision goig with 2wd 170, due to really 4x4 was for towing and not getting stuck in snow. so vased only going somewhere there got hard standing is fine and if it snows then may be late for work!!

now last decision will be on stereo std 8 or 10 speaker upgrade? current Audi has great stereo not as good as a volvo S80 I owned but close. Does anyone have any views on the stereo, may start another thread?

:wonder:

10 speaker, you won't regret it.

Always go for the best you can afford, then you will never regret it. Have a look in the Octavia (I think it is there) forum for the thread on winter tyres, makes for interesting reading on the 2wd vs 4wd debate.

A very common misconception. 4x4 is useful 52 weeks of the year.

Ehh, nope! Maybe for heavy towing drivers that cant handle the throttle properly.

Update

Now had car since 1st march and covered 1100 miles.

So glad I made the correct choice, what a car its just Superb better than the A6 I had previously.

DSG rules

Add the full-size spare wheel. Especially as you have the detachable tow bar. The bar fits into the spare wheel tool section.

Phil.
