Really annoying rattle / vibration

Featured Replies

Noticed this morning that my car has developed what I can only describe as a platicy vibration /rattle from either in the engine bay or behind the dash board passenger side. It only appears at around 950-1000rpm and when coming off power. I have hunted about it the engine bay and can find nothing and I'm not sure if I want to rummage around under the dash. Any possible solution appreciated as I don't fancy another 30mile jaunt to the Skoda garage and I don't really have the time at the moment. I did search the forum for solutions but only found one for a petrol.

Getting seriously *%$ed with the car now!

Is it the shiny trim around the speedo/rev counter?

Andy

I have something similar at 1200 to 1400rpm on a light throttle regardless of the car being hot or cold. I described it as a "gurgle". Allams have had my car many weeks and in the end it was said a "man from Milton Keynes" has to come down... Allams is too far from me so I have yet to book the car in somewhere closer to me for this mysterious man to come have a look. I saw the 1,2 vibration fix on here as well but have not had a time to see if the diesel engine compartment works in the same way - guess you have and no luck?

Its not the instrument cluster, thats ok for now.

It certainly sounds like it maybe a loose pipe or similar within the engine bay bulk head area but I have given it a pretty good examination with the engine idling on 950-1000rpm and can find anything loose, the noise can be heard inside the car but not when your head is in the engine bay as there is too much other noise. At one point I thought it was something wrong mechanically with the engine.

As for the pictures of the loose pipe secured with the cable tie on the 1.2, I cannot locate similar within my engine compartment so perhaps it is a petrol only solution although it wouldn't be the first time I've missed the obvious.:giggle:

I'm loathed to go back to Skoda, a lot of times they come back worse than they went.

Only 600 odd miles on the clock!!!

James at Allams replicated my gurgle easily and with his help we did determine that it was not gearbox related as the noise was exactly the same at those revs regardless of the gear the car was in. So it must be something rubbing in the the engine compartment or who knows what. Mine is also more pronounced on the left (when listening from inside the car) than on the right and can't be heard with the engine open........... Typical! It was there from the day I got it and I've lived with it for 12,000 miles now. WILL sort it before the warranty runs out though. Car will stay at dealers for as long as it takes this time.

The noise was not there yesterday when I returned from Skoda, put the car into my garage, changed onto winter wheels/tyres and left it there overnight out the way of the hurricane. Brought it out this morning and the noise had appeared!emoticon-0106-crying.gif

I gave the car its first wash today, so maybe the rattle will be gone tomorrow B)

I wonder whether the winter tyres, having a different construction, have set up a harmonic/vibration in the body?

  • Author

It had crossed my mind about the tyres, Lol.

They are 99 rated.

What pressure are you running them at?

Might be worth having a little fiddle.

  • Author

They are sitting at 32psi, is that about right?

Skoda recommend that they are increased by 2bar (I think) It does say in the fuel cover.

  • Author

Increased by 2 bar , 28psi or increased to 2bar 28psi?

I think Graham means 0.2bar

  • Author

0.2 bar, ok that makes sense. Will check them tomorrow.

So they should be from memory 2.4bar all round for light loads.

Time for me to re-check mine.

Sorry, yes 0.2.

I shall go and stand in the corner of the signalbox.

Its probably a brake pipe rattling on the bulkhead, your description is EXACTLY the same as i had. Mine started within 10 miles of picking it up new from the dealers. Next day it went back with me spitting feathers ( long story with this dealer). It was vibrating under any kind of accelerating load. It was booked in for that week and fixed with a brake pipe being "relocated". No details on where and how but was happy with the result......until that is i started to notice the same rattle when under engine braking, usualy 3rd to 2nd and only brief sounds so bearable but still not good enough for a new car. I looked in the bay and found brake pipes crossing each other and actually rubbing together. This wasnt the problem though ( i seperated briefly with foam pad) so the Snow Monster is going back yet again for a rattle with under 1000 miles on the clock. This car will be taken back to the dealer time and time again until it is perfect. If Skoda want to charge premium prices for this car then they should deliver a premuim product.

I've had a really thorough inspection of the engine bay and can detect nothing loose that could cause the noise. I can hear the noise inside the car but when I move to the engine I can't locate it, I'm now more inclined to think its behind the dash board.

Pretty disappointing really, I was driving the wifes mk6 Golf today, 12600 miles and not a rattle or squeek, this is what I thought I was buying into with the Yeti.

You thought you were getting VW quality from a Skoda?

  • Author

Well,,, yes. Why not?

Its part of the VW group, I should benefit from their quality control.

Because there's a hierachy and Skoda are at the bottom. Seat are broadly on a similar spec, but VW are higher than Skoda/Seat, Audi are higher than VW, Bugatti and Bentley are higher than Audi.

That's just how it works.

Whether it's cheaper plastics, not as much sound deadening... Skoda have to cut costs somewhere!

  • Author

It's nothing to do with cutting costs, its more about working to their budget to achieve their target of profit which is irrelevant to me. I paid considerably more for the Skoda than the VW, I am entitled to expect at least similar build quality.

It is relevant to you as this governs the price you pay for it!

You can buy a Skoda for £30k, and you can buy a VW for £7k. It's not really a comparison.

This is just the way it is :)

If you've got a genuine problem, speak to your dealer. Otherwise learn to deal with it!

  • Author

Using your example and line of thinking would you expect the 7k VW to have a better or worse build quality than the 30k Skoda?

On par, given that it's the up! and the Superb...
