Anybody owned/driven 2.0CR 6 speed & 1.6CR Greenline?

Featured Replies

Hopefully ordering either a 2.0 CR TDi S hatch with met paint and cruise or 1.6CR TDi Greenline SE tomorrow.

Has anybody owned or driven both. I'm buying via 'drive the deal'. I've messed up slightly though as I have informed the local dealer about drive the deals prices and I'm no longer in negotiations with them  so i'm going to find it hard to ring and ask for a test drive so that I can then go and buy off drive the deal! :giggle:

I'm hoping that drive the deals skoda dealer is near enough to go and have a test drive.

Anybody have any suggestions? I need to order this month to get the discount and finance deal.

Although I've experienced both these engines in the Superb, it's hard to make a recommendation without knowing your yearly mileage, driving style, length of time you plan to keep the car and current car.

Previously, I drove a remapped 1.9Tdi Twindoor for 95,000 miles, during which time, it never missed a beat and recorded 57.1mpg. By comparison, my 4,800 mile Greenline Combi is producing 61.4mpg, however, I miss the torque wave.

The 1.6Tdi has a nice exhaust note (surprising really) and is adequate for solo use, however, if you regularly carry passengers and/or loads, the 2.0CR will be more relaxed.

For private use, I'd consider choosing a 2.0CR 140 which is still very economical, but has a better ride than the lowered ride height of the Greenline. That said, in the Superb SE I have a car with a superior spec to a basic 'S' Passat, plus Superb's are a rarer sight than Passat's.

I'd also suggest trying a 1.6Tdi Passat Estate, particularly if you could find a demo/nearly new example. The ride quality is better than the Greenline Combi, plus you get a full size spare wheel as standard, together with a 10 litre larger fuel tank.

If you opt for a 'S' Spec Superb, make sure you opt for cruise and maxidot.

Thanks for the quick reply.

I didn't mention my use/mileage etc on purpose. I've mentioned use and mileage in previous posts but felt that answers posted were based on economy as i cover such high mileage.

I will be doing approx 500-800 miles per week as it will be used for chauffeur/airport transfers, 70% motorway.

My biggest concern is that the 5 speed will feel as though it needs a 6th gear - a feeling of running out of gear so to speak.

I'm confident the 1.6 CR will be acceptable in terms of torque/power. According to official figures I will be approx £27 better off in diesel cost for every 1000 miles i cover with the 1.6 greenline 2.

I just don't want to get 'smoke screened' by the consumption figures before considering the 5 speed gearbox.

I hope the above is clear & understandable :)

There has been a previous debate about the 5 speed vs 6 speed, and the 5 speed has differant ratios to the 6 speed, to account for the loss of the extra gear. Hear is a chart to show the noise differances:

P.S, my V6 is loudest on that list, and its unbelievably quite. Sounds quieter than the 170 diesel I test drove

This is out of cabin noise stats, in-cabin noise depends on sound insulation in the car, and that can vary with engine type.

Generally, for in-cabin noise on motorway, the lower the rpm in top gear the better. For diesels, there is also a threshold around 3000-3500rpm (different for different engines) after which the engine noise increases considerably. Petrol engines also have this, though at higher rpm.

Though if you plan to do under 80mph all the time, all engines are probably OK, for motorway speeds and an odd cruise in Europe 2.0 and 6 speeed is a lot more sensible.

I had the 1.6 superb hatch as a loan car yesterday. It doesn't feel like it needs a 6th gear and it is a cracking little engine, even compared to the 170 I have in mine. It pulls exceptionaly well but I'm not convinced that it will be that fuel efficient once loaded up, it's a small engine in a big car and if you add luggage and passengers...

The 1.6 is noisier than the 2.0 but I'm not sure if that is down to the specification (SE to Elegance?

For those sort of miles (I do about 750-1000 a week) if you can afford it go for the 2.0 and get a DSG box. I'm currently getting 37.55 MPG after 6050 miles at a cost of £0.18 per mile using Ultimate diesel (from Fuel Friend) I'm changing back to normal diesel for the next few fills to see how much of a difference there is! These are a real mixed bag of motorway and city driving and I'm hoping it'll loosen up with time.

Hope this helps

The Greenline's engine will still pull in 5th gear when on a motorway or A road at 70mph, unlike the similiarly engined Passat which bogged down in 6th at the same speed.

My driving is propbably also 70% motorway and after a little over 5,000 miles I'm averaging a documented (brim to brim) 61.41mpg (see Spiritmonitor.de), which can only improve with more miles.

Thanks bigJim

I'm relieved to hear some good recent feedback regarding the 1.6. You mentioned 37.55 mpg - I could do with getting more than that if poss. I'm going to order a greenline 2 se once I'm sure i've got the best price i can. I think with the higher gearing of the greenline along with the cruise control it should be fine.
