RARB is coming off..

Featured Replies

I've got an odd issue, and all suggestions so far as to why have proved no good.

Basically, my rear tyres are wearing rapidly on the inside edges, to the point now that they are being taken off tomorrow and thrown away. The inside edges are bald, with the nylon just starting to show through in places, wheras the rest of the tyre has 5-6mm left.

They're not cheap tyres - Eagle F1 GSD3's

Rear beam looks straight, and tracking is ok. Will undergo a full geometry check in due course.

Rear beam bushes are fine

The only thing we (me & my mechanic) can think of, and has been suggested previously by Moggytech, is that the RARB is throwing something geometry wise out at the rear end, and causing the tyres to scrub badly.

Before I take this drastic measure, and re-introduce the boat-like body roll, can anyone suggest anything else to check or do?

Of all the many people on here with RARB's, surely I can't be the only one with this issue? Or am I just THAT special

My dad's Honda Accord had this issue.

How much stuff do you often carry in your car, as honda's excuse for it was the car was being overloaded yet once it had been back in the garage after a lot of complaining. The issue went away and never returned before it got changed, but they wouldn't admit to having changed anything.

your castor is wrong ,has it been lowered, if so it will definately be out , you need 4 wheel lazer alignment doing before anything else

Usually carry very little in the boot - Hi viz, pair of work boots, and a few bottles of car things.

Nope, standard suspension bar the RARB, a strut brace up front and all poly/cupra r bushes at the front end.

I figure put it back to standard, let it settle, then get the geometry checked. Ideally would like to keep the RARB though, it made a hellofa difference to the handling.

I don't see how the RARB can really affect this issue. First I have heard. I have been running the Jabba ARB for a good 4 or 5 years? (I got the bar they used for developing the kit :D) and never had any tyre wear issues on the back.

Exactly, it's stumped everyone I've asked. I can say it only started doing it / I only noticed it doing it after fitting the RARB.. It's coming off, and I'll see if the problem persists.

Castor incorrect on the rear?

Can the beam have taken a knock or not been bolted up correctly. With both tyres wearing on the inside badly it suggests the camber has maybe been upset either by lowering severely or a knock (eg a thump at the top/leading edge of a wheel could slightly kink the mount point to affect camber/toe-in and wear out inner edges)

But would have to have been bumped on both wheels the same? Unlikely.

Camber would increase as the beam swings lower as the wheels move through an arc but tbh I've known some very low cars that have not had issue.

My tyres wear perfectly flat with Jabba rear arb, power flex bushing and Spax RSX coil overs, although some would argue it may not quite have the speed of a vRS I still corner quick when up to speed.

What wheel pressure are you running?

Exactly. Most odd. Would be curious to see a 4 wheel alignment of the setup of this car.

I thought the rarb helped reduce tyre wear when I had mine fitted. After removing it I have seen more wear on them.

Rear right did take a bad hit (burst a tyre) clipping a kerb one time, but that was ages ago, and didn't effect the wear noticeably. And as said, that would surely affect one side only? Mechanic eyeballed the rear beam and says it looks ok, as far as he could tell.

What wheel pressure are you running?

As per the fuel filler cap - 2.2 bar IIRC.. I am running 205/50/16s though, have been for many years without previous issue.

I have slightly porus wheels, so they don't hold the air fantastically. They will be refurbed in due course. I check/top the air up every other week or so - car's not used too often.

Puzzling. :S

Four wheel alignment is probably a good bet anyhow.

Even when no real issues , 4 wheel alignment can show up wrong settings, my car lowered, all were in spec but not same both sides, altered camber at rear and front caster, really less understeer now, my mates FL was out too and noticable difference on his as well  He recomended higher pressures too , 36 as opposed to 32

My understanding is that there is no adjustment on the rear?

All I can suggest, was the suspension in its natural position when the rarb was put on?

RARB wont effect angles on rear suspension. It only help with body roll on turns. It must be something wrong on:

1. Low pressure - if you running over 1.5 neg camber then lower tyre pressure with anything below 32PSI will show inside wear on tyres.

2. Something bent - starting with something on hub to bent axle. Ive seen few cars with axle bent in a middle because someone decided to jack car in wrong place and twised beam. They usually very strong but it happended in a past.

I strongly suggest 4 wheel alignment with print-out. That way I could review it and tell you where you might have a problem. To me it sounds like "your mechanic" looks at it and think there is nothing bent. On detailed equipment it might shows something totaly different and proove why you wearing your tyres so bad. I bet alignment will show this.

Limited but there is. You can do few small things and install shims. Which ever way not so many people like to do something on a back with straight beam.
