DSG holding gears too long

Apologies if this one has been discussed, but if it has I'm too dim to come up with an appropriate search string to find previous discussions.

My DSG 'box starting behaving oddly this week, one morning after kicking down to overtake, it didn't return back up to 5th and 6th when I eased back off the throttle. It was about -4C out if that is possibly related. Slipping it into manual and changing it myself seemed to cure the problem, and for the rest of the drive to work it seemed fine.

On the way home (temp still below zero), lifting off to slow down, whilst coasting up over a bridge with a blind bend both sides, prompted the DSG to change down to 4th again. When back on the the straight and flat and back on the throttle it once again wouldn't change up at the normal 2k revs, but held on. Cured again by slipping to manual and doing it myself.

The following day the temperature was up a bit, and the car behaved normally so I put it down to some strange effect with the chilly day, however the day after that it started misbehaving again, so I decided to leave it in DSG to see how high it would rev and if it would change at all, though obviously I wasn't going to let it bounce of the rev limiter if it refused. It went up to about 4k revs and then shifted rapidly up through to 6th and back to a normal between 1.5-2k rpm. At the same time as this the ABS and ESP/TCS lamps illuminated orange. The gears then behaved perfectly normally for the remainder of the drive home where I stopped at my local garage to book it in. When I restarted the warning lights had gone off.

Could a gearbox oil and filter change cure the odd DSG behaviour?

Could the brakes be the cause of the issues? i.e. would binding brakes make the car work harder and make it thinks it needs to hold onto lower gears a bit longer?

I suspect the issues are related otherwise I have a large coincidence on my hands. Could the sudden change up through 3 gears from 3rd to 6th have unbalanced the torque? Causing the ABS ESP/TCS confusion and warning lights? I didn't feel any wheelspin or torque steer at the time.

Any and all suggestions are appreciated.

The only sane thing is to get VCDS on it and check for codes.

Can I ask if there was any sort of gradient/hill at all?

I have found the DSG responds to hills with a decent control- in the snow, braking whilst going downhill it down-changed and stayed in 1st, on a wet road, same situation 3rd.

Hi 1.4 TSi,

Gradient was not a factor in my problems at all. I reposted the above in the "Ask a Tech" forum and was pointed in the direction of ABS sensor, which was confirmed when it went into garage for a diagnostic. Sensor and associated bits replaced and the car is brand new again.

ah excellent, glad to hear it, will squirrel that knowledge away in case I have similar.
