vRS remap insurance question?!

Featured Replies

I have just had a quote from Elephant (who are my current insurance comapny) for £500 extra! Taking my policy to just over £2300! Now im aware that being a young driver (19 years old) im going to attract high insurance premiums, but surley this is just taking the p*ss! :swear:

I have had other quotes for Admiral and Bell (I know they are all the same company!) of year long policies with the remap declared for just under £2000. However Elephant said they couldnt match this! When I searched for these quotes I also put in a standard vRS and then one with a remap to see what the differance between the quotes were, the differance was about £50. How can it be right that Elephant charge £500 for 9 months (as i have had the car for three months standard now) when other compaines want £50 for a whole year!?

Sorry, rant over!

Has anyone else had any experiance like this? And if so what have you done about it? Is it worth me canceling my insurance with Elephant and taking it out with another insurer? If I was to do this how much would the cancelation fee be/How much of my £1880 that I spent insuring my vRS in November am i likley to get returned to me?

Any help an/or advice would be much appreciated!

I have just asked for another quote for my car with coilovers installed, im looking forward to seeing what stupid figure they pluck out of the air this time!

Main comparison site insurers are usually crap with modifications, especially younger drivers.

Try the site sponsors. I'm with Sky Insurance, by far the cheapest for me

My pet hate is when they class option extras as modifications. Do on my wife's Clio I say it's had suspension mods it goes up. But if you phone and yes it was a factory fitted option it makes no difference to a stock car.

Ok, i jsut dont want to loose loads of money by changing companies, cancelation fee's etc... Also it will then be another 3 months untill I get my years NCB. I seriously dont know what to do, change and loose some money and 3 months crash/points free insurance. Or stick with it in a standard car untill my insurance come up for renewal in November...

Just out of intrest, how old are you Softscoop? and how much was your insurance with all the modifications that you have?

Cheers

Try Brentacre insurance - did you not think about getting quotes before you had it remapped.

You could always go back to the standard map

This is slightly differant to that as this will clearly be an aftermarket modification. However, yes I can see why that would be very annoying!

Luckly, I checked becuase I thought something like this would happen! So no, I havent had my car remapped yet. I was just testing seeing before I got it mapped. Im just amazed at how they can charge an extra £500 for a remap!

I was with admiral then phoned elephant who was going to undercut them by 975 quid so I phoned admiral back up and they took my 2300 a year fully comp insurance down to 1200 ish. Win!!!!

19 with 0 NCB - it's hardly surprising really.

I'd just wait until you've got your first year NCB then when you shop around, specifically ask about the mods that you're thinking of doing.

Odd as Admiral and Elephant are the same company.

Every time I've had a quote off them, it's almost been identical.

I have held my licence and been driving for two years with no points and no crashes (I was just on my parents insurance policy so havent built up my NCB)

It just baffels me that Admiral increase the premium by £50 for 12 month policy and Elephant want £500 for 9 months! Its even more confusuing since they are all the same company anyway...

Did you actually speak to admiral about it? As ticking the box sometimes gives a cheap quote then they'll phone for more info and up the extra!

Just got a quote for 50mm lowering. They wont insure me. Im majorly confused by all this, as when i took out the policy I checked (by doing a quote) that I could do all these modifications... And now when I want to add them to the policy the cost goes through the roof, or they wont insure me.

Lesson for any young vRS owners. Declare all your mods on your policy when you take it out, even if you havent done them yet. Will save yourselves lots of money and time.

It's unlikely, but technically they could use that as an excuse not to pay out. The car should be "as described" to your insurers, for example if you've declared coilovers and a crash assessor sees that there's standard shocks on then I believe they'd be within their rights to void your policy (either because you'd been dishonest about the spec, or because it implies you'd taken the coilovers off in order to try and get a second pair from the insurers).

It's unlikely that they'd do it (IMO), but if for whatever reason they're looking for a reason not to pay out then that would be an acceptable one (again, IMO).

TBH, if you have mods planned, your better of going with a specialist to start with.

Thats a good point, any excuse not to pay out. Just to clarify I havent done any of these modifications. I was just seeibg the insurance implications before doing them. Lucky i did!

Yer, wish i had thought about that now :-/ well roll on November where i can get it right! (hopefully)

The first year I had my fabia it stay standard for this reason. Didnt fuss me too much, gave me a year to enjoy and get use to it while stock piling parts ready to wack on soon as I changed companies.

Looks like ill be doing exactly the same thing unfortunatley... Be able to go stage 2 by November with all the money i will have saved up! Lol i wish....

I'm paying 1200 with elephant, I'm 19 with 3 years no claims but with standard fab rs

Hi, when you think the remap will give you around 30 bhp or 25% more bhp and a lot more toque and your only 19 yrs old - is it so ridiculous.

Your lucky to have a VRS as there are lots of 19 year olds that can't afford a car, or have to settle for peugeot 106xnd !

Enjoy what you got.

Best wishes,

John

The insurer will have a standard percentage loading for the remap which they will charge all customers. If you were therefore paying £500 for your annual premium the addition premium would be much less, as you pay a high annual premium then the additional premium reflects.

Thanks
