2007.5 - 2.0 TFSI VRS buying guide / advice

Featured Replies

Hello,

I was hoping someone could give me some pointers / advice on what to look out for when considering buying the Mk2 VRS TFSI?

I've tried doing a couple of key word searches but haven'r really found anything...

I've read there have been issues with cam lobes and fuel pumps (not sure if this relate to high mileage engines or all), and also issue running certain engines (not sure of the production years) on 95 ron instead of 98 ron?

Could anyone confirm what year the 2.0 TFSI lost it's stratification mode? to allow it to run on 95 ron?

Any other pointer would be greatly appreciated...

Many thanks

Rob

AFAIK it didn't. The TSI runs fine on 95 but the TFSI prefers 97+.

It CAN run on 95 and some members here don't use super at all. I'd run mine on 95 if I had a Shell nearby but since I'm stuck with the supermarkets I always use super.

I've read the odd thing about fuel pumps and cam lobes but they don't seem to be a common problem.

At 07 (mine is an 07) it's overdue a cambelt change (4yr) if it's not been done. 4yr service is also a biggy

The ESP modules are a more common fault so check it's ok buy switching it off and checking the light comes on (allegedly dealers take the bulb out to hide the fault). Was once a very expensive fix but there is a much cheaper kit now

Check rear tyre wear they eat the inside shoulders and it's not obvious unless you have a proper look.

About that date Skoda was giving away free options, 18" wheels, Jumbo box, rear e/w and dual climate. Any car of that vintage without them is going to be worth a little less.

Discs and pads are probably going to be needing done on anything you look at unless they've already been taken care of.

Touch wood; mine is on 55k and runs exactly the same as when I got it; I've no reason to think that'll change any time soon.

TFSI seems to be a good solid engine.

Only problems I have had is the dreaded Teeves ABS http://briskoda.net/...eves-mk60-list/ I am on there, the tumble flap motor has been resett twice, simple with vag -com . No sawtoothing of tyres, perfect, a four wheel alignment can sort it if out, no need to put up with it, try to get one with cruise control as well. The search engine on here is useless, a tip for you enter on Google what specific area you are looking for, brake, cambelt , remapp etc for mark 2 vRS Octavia followed by Briskoda and bingo you have it for eg http://www.google.co...iw=1280&bih=614 hope this helps

Thanks for the replies Guys,

I'm now the proud owner of a Black VRS... with 18" wheels, Jumbo box, rear e/w and dual climate.

The performance is amazing! I don't know why I didn't get one sooner.

Excellent car, I can't stop smiling...

Rob.

Jolly Dee, Now for a remap for some more power eh? :giggle:

Rob,

As a fellow black VRS owner, may I congratulate you on your wise choice.

Sadly, due to the fact that putting your foot down will always make you smile, you can expect to be visiting the petrol pumps more frequently than you may have thought. It's not bad for economy (I get about 34mpg) but it's just too tempting to give it the beans!

Enjoy!

On another note, the fuel filler cap has the 95 ron sticker....

Would I see any improved performance running 98 ron? Should I run it on 98 anyway?

Thanks

Rob

Never used 95, more performance from 98

I believe the TFSI engine will run on 95 RON petrol, but is designed for 98+. I personally always use Tesco Momentum, BP Ultimate etc. It doesn't cost that much more per fill and is worth it for the extra smiles!

Fuel economy on a long motorway run (at around 75 mph indicated):

34 - 35.5 mpg on 95 RON

37 - 39.7 (my best yet) on 99 RON Tesco/Shell.

I don't use BP Ultimate - it's 97 RON not 98+ as Tesco Momentum and Shell V-Power are.

(My previous experience with a Leon Cupra R was that 97 RON didn't give the same performace and economy benefits as 98 RON Shell.

Also, BP fuel is more expensive around where I live than either Tesco or Shell. Tesco is definately best value for 98+ around here.)

Thanks for the heads up re fuel El Dingo. Will fill up on 98 ron next time and check the mpg.

The performane on 95 ron keeps me grinning, feel so smug, a truely amazing engine.

Not much difference on 99Ron Vs 95 but the engine just seems that bit sharper.

for me I can only describe the difference as it's like you have 2 adults in the back seat when you use 95RON.

Keep an eye on your oil until you figure out if yours is a drinker or a sipper. It can go down quickly all of a sudden.

Just piggybacking on this thread. Decided an Octy VRS is my next motor and going to look at a Black 57 plate with dual climate, jumbo box, rear EW and 18" wheels as stated. Made a note of checking tyres etc

Just a couple of questions (hope you don't mind):

I am new to the Skoda world, what is servicing like and which are the big milestones I should watch out for, the car I am looking at has done 40k?

Also the ESP fault was mentioned but my google foo has failed me, where about on the dash is the location of the light?

Cheers.

From memory the light is inside the righthand dial (speedo). The button to turn it on and off (which I think also lights up) is underneath the climate controls on the far right of the console.

See if I can find a picture.........

Cheers it appreciated. Going for a test drive later, so fingers crossed its a nice example.

As for a 57 on 40k it should have cambelt and waterpump and inspection service if its not been done,

Personally if it was me it would be all belts and tensioner's replaced, inspection service(which is a basic oil and filter change and a good visual check of everything incl lube the bonnet hinge and clean of plenum chamber), i would also replace air filter pollen filter and spark plugs.

God i'm so sad at times and very an-al regarding maintenance.... i need to get out more :giggle:

Thanks had a good look at it before the light faded on me tonight, going back Saturday for a drive. Been a long time since I drove a Petrol so should be a fun change. Seems the big things have been done, ie cambelt etc and the car looks nice and tidy. Dealer also offered me a more than fair price on mine in trade.

Do it... It's an amazing engine!

Absolutely love mine, the feel of the power when you're crusing, and the tone of the exhaust with a little load ;) nice, and when it hits 4.5k rpm Woohoo!

I am sitting here a little excited at the prospect, good price, nice spec and dealer seems ok. Was hoping I could do a deal on a sat nav unit but they were not interested. Just hope it runs well with a proper test.

Is there anything to listen out for engine note wise and startup and running? used to listening to my tractor and I forgot what a real car sounds like :)

They sound a little agricultural until oil fills the tappets 1st 30 secs to a minute, and then throaty, mind you , people think mine has a turbo cat back miltec as mine has allways sounded meatier than most

Sorry to Hijack this thread but I am going to look at this today.

Do you think it is up at a fair price and is there anything I should look out for?

Looks ok , but no xtras , jumbo box , rear electric windows, cruise control, cheap tyres as well, the wheels look like 17s rather than 18, kerbed and finish lost sparkle look white. How long has it been on the forecourt , quite a while judjing by the bright sunny day and leaves still on the trees , so before Autumn , look at the pictures of the silver golf, by the same seller and you will see what I meen, no ,leaves on the trees :wonder:

As I said to you you can see the price it was up for last year was 8999. Think it has rear electric windows? Its just that the price seems pretty good for the age and comparing it to some of the same price, a few did not have the dual zone climate control and mileage was higher. Wheels can be sorted (is there much difference between the ride on 17s and 18s?)

yes in the pics it has rear electric windows, they missed a trick by saying it had fronts only in the blurb. Regarding the wheels you could change them at a later date, same diameter, just a higher tyre profile so more comfy ride but not as cool to look at
