Using vagcom on another make?

Featured Replies

Just a quick question, is it possible to use vagcom to read and clear faults on other makes cars? My uncle has a E46 3 series which needs service and airbag light resetting was wondering if I could use my vagcom to do it?

Cheers

I'm not sure how you'd connect the two together as the diagnostic port will be different to a VAG car.

Edit: well that's something new I've learnt today!

Nah, OBD2 is a standard port and protocol so physically it should plug in.

You would probably be able to plug your copy of VCDS in and get the standard OBD2 codes from the engine module (which are less detailed than manufacturer specific ones), but not to control other modules like airbags which would require BMW specific equipment (i.e. the BMW equivalent of VCDS). I'm guessing on a Beemer (as on VAG) the service indicator data is probably stored as part of the instrument cluster as that's where the odometer data is, and where the warning would appear so you probably won't be able to reset that either.

Ah right, so I'm guessing a £30 eBay reader will be as useful? I knew most cars have a standard port so thought it was worth asking

Cheers guys

The OBD function will just read the engine ECU. I've used VCDS in OBD mode on quite a few different makes with some success, though I've had it not working with some Fords. A favourite BMW airbag fault is with passenger seat occupancy sensor, it's basically a sensor mat under the cover and it breaks. A cheap fix is to make a circuit board with some resistors and a diode in it (a Google should reveal the specifics) and plug it in.
