Elegence 1.9TDI, WHOOOSH NOISE

Featured Replies

Hi All

My AWX Engine played up last week, went into limp-home mode, but prior to this event, there was an unusual whooosh sound coming from the engine, when the vehicle is driven under part load conditions, mostly motorway driving. Upon engine off and key on, ECU reset itself, and engine was fine.

I replaced the fuel filter, air filter, and drove the vehicle in town today, but can still hear the whoosh sound from air vents.

I know the EGR Valve doesnt work, DTC for it comes up on OBD Check....

Please HELP !!!!

Thanks

Could be broken inter cooler pipe underneath the car. You have to remove the engine protection shield to get to it.

Hi Cown,

I had a similar problem with 1.9TDI Passat (2004 Model) and it was a split turbo hose.

Hope this helps,

Rob

I had the same issue last week turned out to be split intercooler pipe from turbo down to under radiator cost of new pipe €150 turns out that on the 130hp model this particular pipe is only common to the 130hp B5 passat

Thanks all

Didn't get round to reading your replies, until after i had checked all the top hoses, airfilter, fuel filter changed, and today removed bumper, and removed both intercooler inlet and Compressor Outlet hoses. Turbo checked and all ok.....

Compressor outlet hose had a split. Does anyone know where i can get new parts ?

Don't want to pay dealer prices.

Now engine power is good, just worried as i repaired the hose, until i acquire a new set. The intercooler inlet connection has some rust. Sprayed WD40....

Has anyone fitted a CCV Oil/Air separator ?.

cheers

whoosh to a squeal, 2500rpm-3500rpm, the battery light (alternator) comes on.

I have read online that this could possibly be the alternator clutch pulley on its way out ?.

faster and the light comes on - as above. Alternator service light comes on as message on dash....

I can drive upto 80MPH, any

If the hose you are talking about is the one from the turbo to the steel pipe running underneath the radiator (S shaped) then this pipe is only compatible with the VW passat B5 model 130hp which makes it harder to get from a breakers yard. Like I said in an earlier post unless I have been misinformed it's time to put hand in pocket and give the stealer's €150 euro or £120 in UK

I done a repair on my pipe -- superglued the split duck taped the pipe the put 4 tie wraps around it, it lasted just over 300 miles and I hear it starting to go again so if you do source a supplier of these hoses at a decent price post the address please.

Thanks for reply...

This supplier is based in Germany, and only offer genuine parts, from what i can see. So you have to enter the genuine part number. I even ordered the seals for the other Intercooler hoses.

The total was cheaper than UK main dealer, and what you listed above....

Parts are a rip off, but i love my Superb too much, to scrap it.

Now the Alternator clutch is misbehaving....

Any ideas ?.

Aletrnator clutch is fairly straight forward.

However to fit one yourself you need a special tool which hold the wheels steady and then allows you to turn the nut without turning the wheel itself.

They are available from ebay.

The new wheel/clutch is available seperately.

I have changed the alternator pulley on a couple of cars but not a superb. I would suspect there is not enough room between the pulley and the side of the engine bay to insert the tool into the pulley. You will also need to apply a lot of brute force (breaker bar and possibly a scaffolding pole) as it will be bloody tight and that will be difficult with it in situ.

Ideally I would remove the alternator and apply some penetrating oil liberally to the middle of the pulley and leave it for a few hours to assist in getting it off.

As for the tool sealey do a couple, I have the Sealey SX401 kit which will do a wide range of cars, though there is a cheaper one which will work too.

I too have had to replace the clutch pulley its probably best to remove the alternator but it in its self is not a straight forward job first loosen the cooling fan (as it free running you need to hold it to loosen the 10mn bolts) believe it or not the tool that loosens the disc on an angle grinder fits the 2 holes on the front of the fan perfectly next remove the belt simple enough just lift the tension pulley now for the alternator there is one torx bolt that has to be accessed from the back and if my memory is correct this bolt is too long to remove and can give grief you will have to think about this as you run into the problem I think I cut a small bit of the end before loosening it and this solved the problem maybe somebody know how to get around this one but that is the only issue when removing the alternator once you have it off replacing the pulley is a straight forward job but I did use the pullers to remove the pulley as it was a little tight (its not a good plan to start hammering an alternator) replacing the alternator is only a ten minute job

Alternator pulley seems ok now. Must have been the WD40 on the belt, which caused issue - slip.

You can check the pulley by using a small screwdriver to rotate the vanes within the alternator round - you should be able to move them one way, if it won't turn then the pulley is seized. However the pulley make be starting to seize in which case you need to remove the pulley and compare to a new one to see the difference.

Thw WD40 may actaully help for a short while. Was it worse when the engine was cold?
