Alternator light coming on >2300rom

Featured Replies

Hi All

Yesterday, I had a new problem, squeal, >2300rpm, the battery light (alternator) comes on.

I have read online that this could possibly be the alternator clutch pulley on its way out ?.

faster and the light comes on - as above. Alternator service light comes on as message on dash....

I can drive upto 70MPH, any clues please ?

Also, what is the process in removing the pulley from Alternator, don't fancy spending money on a new Alternator.

Almost certainly the alternator clutch pulley. Change as soon as possible - they have been known to come apart and penetrate the radiator.

You need a hollow splined key for the nut and a long Torx or ribe splined bit to hold the shaft. The Bosch and Valeo alternators require different tools so check which one you have.

Another uncorrected VAG long term fault - the average survival for a pulley seems to be about 90k miles. How many did yours make?

rotodiesel.

Thanks for update. Mileage is 192k. So going strong. ;-)

Mine is at 100k now and starting the get a squeel on cold mornings. No battery light though.

The squeals minimal, and I drove >80MPH without any battery/alternator light coming on.

But I will still replace the O.A.P.

Just had mine replaced today at 119K, but cambelt due anyhow so new alternator put on by JKM. Mine originally had a Valero unit but Bosch equivalent was quite a bit cheaper, so if you don't have the skills or time to do DIY, maybe this is best option. No brainer for me as cambelt due also.
