oil in intercooler pipes

Featured Replies

Had posted intercooler pipe busted tread a little while back done a repair job on it but when I inspected it this evening to see how it was holding up I have noticed that there is a lot of oil coming down the pipe so it would seem that the oil seals are getting worn in the turbo. Would it be best to remove the turbo and get it reconditioned now before it lets go or just ignore it and hope for the best then if need be just replace it if it does fail. As the car has 200k on the clock I don't want to spend a fortune on it

Oil in the turbo pipe is not uncommon, if I were you I'd look out for a cheap second hand one just in case, at least you'll have one ready to go and you won't be off the road for long.

Some oil in the intercooler pipes is perfectly normal - a lot can cause engine runaway.

Most turbochargers are changed unnecessarily and on a high mileage PD the most frequent cause of an oily input tract is a partially blocked engine breather pipe or blockage in the "hockey puck" on the rocker cover.

High crankase blowby pressures will prevent the oil being scavenged from the turbocharger bearing - so it has only one other exit route - the intake.

Keep a very watchful eye on the breather system on an old PD. 200k is not bad - what's the rest of it like?

Again thanks rotodiesel will check the breather pipes and hockey puck as for the rest of the car its in good shape was always kept well serviced and maintained had the usual water ingress and front link arm issues but who hasn't I do all the work myself and would be considered fussy I always use quality parts I reckon there is another 100k in her yet
