Awesome GTi Clutch and SMF

Featured Replies

Hi all!

have not long had my car remapped, so far so good and clutch is fine however i know sooner or later it will slipping so am in the process of saving for a new one... Tbh i have been giving the car a lot of sympathy by only putting my foot down past 2k in low gears and 2.5-3k in higher gears being 5th and 6th...

I was thinking that if it went then i would get another OEM however have heard stories that even with a new OEM clutch it will still fail after a short period of time.

I've just look at this kit: http://www.awesome-gti.co.uk/product.php?xProd=47051&xSec=290

Has anyone got any experience with the awseom gti clutch and smf? I'm looking for a kit that once i fit, it won't need replacing.

im running 166bhp and 277lbs/ft of toque and have no plans to increase power further... however it would be nice to put my foot down no matter what revs im sitting at and won't have to worry about the clutch.

Also the reason for me looking at this kit is the price as well, not really planning to spend a thousand pound on a clutch olone and then add on costs afterwards for fitting.

All help appreciated

Could the valeo smf conversion be any intrest? Its to replace standard dmf? Think it can take a little more power than standard, im picking mine up sat and fitting it, il let u know if its noisy etc

Hmm are they any good? also whats the price like?

Im looking at the Awesome kit at the moment but think the valeo is similarly priced so will opt for the stronger Awesome.

Im paying 417inc vat bearing etc etc for valeo the awesome is 625inc vat obv the awesome is better for power but i cant afford that and am only staying original power it will be fine for me

Right after a bit of research i found a thread similar to this one and apparently there are people running 400lbs/ft with the awesome kit which has summed it all up for me. Although im not running that much power it should mean the clutch will last which is what im looking for as i've got the car for 3+ years.

I know it's a lot of money but there are even more expensive kits out there and this was the best i found for price.

A friend will charge me £100 for fitting so not too bad

Right my valeo smf kit is now in and running, runns fine no chatter as such, bit of vibration between 1900 and 2100 revs but missus hasnt noticed it so not bad atall, responce is amazing compared to my dodgy dmf :) overall thumbs up

Any links to more details? How much torque can the clutch take?

On another note... I think the awesome gti clutch is made by techniclutch.. as they won't tell me who it was made by and the clutch cover is red like the techniclutch trademark... also both are kevlar clutches...

Or perhaps they paint the clutch cover :p?

I've got the Valeo SMF kit on my PD130, same as above- vibration around 1800-2100. However, feels more responsive and I've not noticed any additional idle chatter or extra vibration. Out of interest, what are they rated to torque-wise?

The AWESOME kit? 400 ft/lbs mate.

No, the Valeo one. But thanks! :D

Running 277lbs of torque, I would not be too worried about changing the clutch too soon. I have been on STD clutch at approx 290lbs since 20,000 miles now on 82,000 no slip. :)

I've been told some of the kit is made by Borg and Beck, who I've never heard of. SouthBend also have red covers and are much better than Techniclutch ;)

Well I spoke to unit 18, Ali said he's fitted one before and its defiantly not silent and the customer was not impressed who he fitted it for.

Well I phoned awesome and they said the sales team are not told who makes it, That says a lot to me!!

Yeah my mate has an Awesome clutch and it had Techniclutch approved stickers on it.

I have the Southbend clutch from Darkside Developments and it does have a red cover, but all the parts are Sachs - and its silent :) the first few hundred miles were noisey, but once its settled in its fine! Really recommend it actually and the lads at Darkside were brilliant.

I'm kind of thinking that tbh, been driving it now for over a month and seems fine so far, have been putting foot down at the right revs and i think the map helps as well being curved out...

I'm gonna save the money regardless for the clutch so if it did go i can get it replaced for something better than what it already had.

Sounds promising lasting 20,000 miles and still going strong after having a map.

I've only done around 12000 miles since my new clutch was put in but like you Sao I like to utilise the whole rev range rather than be half way through the powerband I've also been looking at the awesome one so if you do get it let me know as I need to go smf route
