Hill Decent

Featured Replies

Could someone please give me a fools guide to how to use the hill decent mode. Keep it simple and to the point....does it work it all gears? How do you know its on? Do you have to do anything with accellerator/brake....what happens if you do use them, does it switch off? Does the off road button have to be on? How fast will it decend etc etc add anything you think i will want to know. I think i may have been using it the other night but was just engine braking in 1st gear. I'm not about to trust my pride and joy and my neck to something i have no idea how to use. Thanks all....

Hi,

only works with the off-road button engaged and in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, reverse and yes neutral. Slope from memory has to be 10 degrees or more and upto 30kph. You control the speed you want with a dab of brake or accelerator, otherwise foot off; will know it's working as the Off-road light will flash constantly.

If the roads are icy or covered in compacted snow you cannot always guarantee grip particularly running 17" summer sports tyres as I found out in the winter of 09 with the first Yeti; spun 180 on a narrow lane during hill descent. This incident lead to my conversion to a winter tyre user and getting this Yeti built with 16" alloys.

The hill descent is part of the offroad button programme. It works by using the brakes to control the speed of the car down the slope. It will work in gear, but when I've used mine I leave it in neutral. The idea is to leave the driver free to concentrate on steering. I don't know how steep the slope has to be before its kicks in. Remember its only an aid, it won't stop you sliding on ice, if gravity takes over....

Use the off road button when descending a hill at less than 20 MPH and the Yeti will maintain the speed that you are doing. It works in any gear and also in neutral. To increase the speed use the throttle and to decrease use the brake, these actions do not turn off the hill decent unless the speed exceeds 20 MPH

Yes, when the ice takes over it feels just like someone has stamped on the throttle...

Just in case it's not obvious from The Plumber's reply, it also works going backwards in neutral. Just the thing if you do what I (deliberately) did this afternoon: go up a very steep snow-covered track which is too narrow to turn on. When it was time to come back down, I rolled down backwards in neutral with the hill descent doing all the work.

From the owners handbook dated 11/11

Automatic gearbox

â— Selector lever in the position D, S or Tiptronic (for the 1st, 2nd, 3rd gear) for

driving forwards - approx. 2 - 30 km/h

â— Selector lever in the position R for driving backwards - approx. 2 - 30 km/h

â— Selector lever in the position N for driving forwards as well as backwards - approx.

2 - 30 km/h

Hill Descent Control is basically the vehicle going downhill at a predetermined low speed, and sensing each individual wheel for slip and randomly letting each wheel roll then be braked. As someone previously said, it feels like walking.

Personally I would never use it in neutral but would use 1st or 2nd, because that also gives you a chance of some engine braking if anything should go wrong. In snow and ice I would use 1st.

My best advice is to find a quiet steep hill when the weather improves and try it. That way you will experience it first hand. I don't know about the Yeti but on the Freelander it used to be very noisy as the shuttle valves in the ABS unit opened and closed rapidly. Some thought the car was falling apart!

FWIW - Didn't notice any obvious noise with ours today - just the flashing light

You normally 'feel' the tyres locking and unlocking in different corners.

Must admit I didn't really pay too much attention cos I hate descending on snowy/icy hills - certainly didn't make any of the noises that my son's Freelander makes!

Thanx TP. :)

Summary for you:

Could someone please give me a fools guide to how to use the hill decent mode. Keep it simple and to the point....does it work it all gears?

NO

only: N, D, S & 1,2,3 plus Neutral and reverse (I'm covering DSG & Manual here)

Does the off road button have to be on?

Yes

How do you know its on?

A green symbol on the speedo comes on solid when it is turned on. (p29 of manual)

the green light on the dash flashes when descending hills 10% or steeper. This indicated the Hill descent is working.

Do you have to do anything with accelerator/brake....what happens if you do use them,

Not if you want to continue down the hill at the speed you were going at the start.

to speed up or to slow down!!!!

Neither turn it off. To do that press the off road button....again

How fast will it descend

It works up to speeds of 30kph. Turns off above that.

How about reading the manual starting on p170 emoticon-0140-rofl.gifemoticon-0140-rofl.gifemoticon-0140-rofl.gif

Have used the hill descent thingy several times but amazed how good it was yesterday- 1 in 4 hill, 6" snow with icy bits- trickled down safely at 10mph, feeling like somebody very strong had Yeti in their hand- extraordinary sensation.

This Land Rover Freelander 2 driver needs to learn to use his, and have appropriate tyres on

I came across this at about 7am this morning in Surrey on one of the climbs up to Woldingham from Godstone. Annoying person. The road was closed.

Never mind, I found another 20% icy and snowy hill to climb instead.

Been using the wonderful Hill Descent loads.
