Do Dealers have to register your car within 10 days?

My car has now arrived in the UK and it will probably be with the dealer later this week. With the new registrations due to start in just over 3 weeks, I have again asked the dealer if he will be prepared to delay registering my car, but he refuses to do this. He says that Skoda UK insist that new cars ordered by customers - as opposed to cars for stock - are registered within 10 days of arriving at the dealership.
I find this very frustrating and wonder if anyone else has come up against this problem.
Incidentally, "excuses" such as being away till the beginnining of March, delays with funds, etc. will not make any difference!

Sadly the dealer is correct, Skoda(UK) insist that cars are registered within 10 days of delivery to the dealer. I believe this is to prevent dealers inflating their sales figures to gain extra quantity discounts.
I ran into this when ordering my car and delayed placing the order until I was sure delivery would be March.

This generally happens when there is price rise (or in my case VAT increase going up to 20%)and Skoda do a deal to hold the old cost if purchased by a certain date. It prevents dealers buying a load of stock at the original price from Skoda, inflating their sales through doing this and thus achieving a bonus from the manufacturer and then flogging on to the customer at the increased price thus gaining all round at Skoda's expense (because its Skoda who pay the dealer the difference between the old and new rate). If the dealer has to register the cars then clearly their market value is significantly reduced and so buying up stock to inflate sales is nowhere near as beneficial.

No.
I know of at least two that didn't.
But I'm not going into specific details on a public forum probably watched by Skoda UK in case it gets them into trouble.
If SUK and some dealers stick to this daft rule how can you order a car and buy a personalised reg number for it?
For all you know it turns up a month or two early, you miss March by two weeks and your £500+ reg number is illegal to display on the older car. Madness.

Car arrived with dealer mid-January.
I emailed robert.hazelwood@skoda.co.uk and got a reply from:
Will Fisher, Customer Relations Manager - Executive Office
ŠKODA UK | Selectapost 34 | Sheffield | S97 3FA
Tel: +44 (0)845 7745745 | fax: +44 (0)844 8267855
customerservices@skoda.co.uk | www.skoda.co.uk | www.skoda-auto.com
Who said he would investigate.... then a further email asking me to talk to my dealer "who are now in a position to update you."
My dealer now has no problems in delaying registration until March 1st - but would like me to pay for it before that date !
ps
It is Skoda UK who were/are imposing this 10 day rule NOT the dealer , my first contact with customer services on the phone was unsuccessful !

Some dealers will get round it but I can pretty much guarantee that the majority will not. The point is that it's not the dealer being awkward. If you pursue it with SUK you might get lucky, or you may not.

This was always the date I wanted the car (and stated this very clearly when I ordered the car back in May), my dealer spoke to Skoda, explained the situation and they were happy with this. I think my garage has two more Yetis that have been delivered but will not be registered till March.
So it looks like it depends how flexible and willing year dealer is to accomodate you.
This is my fifth new Skoda from the same garage which probably helps, I believe my dealer stressed this to Skoda when they had this conversation a few months ago.
I would think at this time of year and in September Skoda are going to expect such requests.

The way to achieve the date you want is to specify a "not before date" on your original signed order form. Dealer usually okay with that as it allows them to choose when to place the actual factory order and to manage the date to achieve the desired delivery date.

That would make sense as that's the arrangement I had with the dealer on the two new Yetis.
Would have been silly to get them early when there are two 12 plates waiting to go on them.

Yeti Tiger here is your solution then: buy a 12 plate personal registration PRONTO and send the paperwork to the dealer telling him to start proceedings to place that plate on the car. Then he can't register before the first of March. :giggle:

The dealer was able to unregister the vehicle and store it, and it was agreed with the lease company to deliver 2 months later, ie 1 month early on the old lease car. The registration would have bee a "Y", instead I received a "51" reg, one of the first of the new scheme.
So this is totally a Skoda thing.

My Fabia mkI VRS was built April-May 2007 and registered in March 2009 on an 09 plate.

I'm delighted to tell you that the dealer has relented, so my Yeti will be registered on 1st March.
Excellent news. As a hopeless romantic, it continues to sadden me that so many dealers will try and get away with as much misinformation as they can.
