Are all SMF noisy?

Featured Replies

Sorry for another single mass flywheel thread, i know there are a few out there but i can't really seem to find an answer to this question.

Do they all make the super loud idle chatter? If there are some that don't, which brand are these? I'm awaiting a price on a SMF kit from Volkswagen. Anyone using one of these?

As per my other thread, mine has failed and it is knocking terribly. I've been looking at replacement DMF but a local mechanic said he has always gone for the SMF conversion each time he's changed one. He wasn't aware of any being any louder on idle afterwards but couldn't honestly say he'd really committed that detail to memory!

A lot of it is the weight of the SMF.

I have a Jabbasport one and it's about 1kg more than the performance ones, so idle chatter is a lot less.

Not bother at all in normal driving. I've heard others that are far noisier.

Southend 'silent' flywheels, Darkside Developments stock them.

As already said, the more heavy they are the quieter they are. Problem is though, some of the heaviest ones are actually more heavy then a DMF

I have the same one as BossFox (on his recommendation and the YouTube video he posted for me!), which is slightly heavier than a Sachs stock item and sounds much quieter than a mate's 7.5kg Helix on his PD130. It's not silent though, but mine (I think) is made worse by a stiffer dogbone mount. It's by no means unbearable though and feels brilliant to drive, especially compared to a DMF that's starting to fail.

The ones from valeo, QH etc that are changed day to day and not to increase performance don't chatter

The one vw will quote u on will be a valeo

Mines a Jabbasport light weight SMF - think its about 6.6kg. its super loud!

Yeah, the old ones were 6.25kg, they're now using 8.5 though.

The ones from valeo, QH etc that are changed day to day and not to increase performance don't chatter

yeah I've heard that a few times, couple of people on SeatCupra.net have said the Valeo SMF sounded no different to the DMF.

That is pretty noisy Luke.

Vw didn't quote me for a SMF after all. They refused to as they were never fitted with one from the factory. MF was crazy money so i bought a dmf kit from gsf for 300 plus vat .

BUT

the noise and vibration has all but gone now! my gf has been driving the car all week (250 miles ish) and didn't even notice anything!

Shall i still replace it?! (could really do with not spending the 360 odd!!)
