Hello Just bought an Octavia 2001 1.9 tdi with an automatic gearbox fault it has done 180k but runs lovely.

The car will go into reverse the reversing lights will come on, but there is no drive at all,

How true is is I don't know may but previous owner said it was fine until he had a new exhaust fitted,

so I don't know if there is a sensor or linkage that may have been damaged during fitting.

As of yet the weather has been too bad to get under the car and investigate.

Any Ideas Please?

I had 2 friends with exactly same problem,a Reanault and a BMW.The gearbox needs serious repairs,the valves block inside needs replacing.

I connected it up to a VAG Diagnostic tool today and there are no fault codes stored, Any idea if there is a linkage in the selector or if its all electronic? As is seems this must be a mechanical fault somewhere.

I'd say the gearbox has a problem not the linkage.
