intercooler leak?

Featured Replies

hi all

had my service last week and they noted down that the intercooler had a leak.

Just taken it in to skoda as my car still has warrenty, but the chap in at the service desk says leaks are not covered by the warrenty. Does state that in the book.

but should an intercooler have a leak? i dont think it should?

can you let me know

Obviously it shouldn't leak.

Are you sure it's the intercooler that's the problem though?

Most common is the boost hoses that connect into it come half disconnected.

To get to it properly, it's a bumper off job. Not technically difficult, but a faffy job if you haven't done it before.

The connectors are a bit poor, and wear after time. You could replace them, or you could use some self tapping screws to fix it in place more permanently.

the vw place i took it too for the service said it was a leak, didnt mention a loose pipe tho.

i have not looked myself due to the weather and cause i had warrenty i took it to skoda

When the word 'leak' is mentioned concerning the leak in your intercooler, is it the fact that oil is dripping from one of the connections in the pipe-work to the intercooler.?

As the intercooler is simply an air-flow radiator it has no moving parts and does not need any lubrication.

If so, it is a common fault as mine has leaked from car being new almost, with the pipe-work.

Have renewed seals, and cleaned pipe connection area's, but it soon starts to leak/drip again, after a short time.

It's something to do with the lubrication of the turbo being blasted through the air-ways to the intercooler radiator and return pipes.

I kept an eye on engine oil level, and got fed-up checking as the level never seems to drop on engine oil dipstick.

think its nothing to worry about then?

You could ask the garage who serviced it to be more specific. That way we can tell you whether it's something to worry about or not.

its the O ring of the pipe that comes into the intercooler

£3.50 not covered by warrenty?

i dont see the point of a warrenty - if they can get out they will

They charged you £82 for a software update to stop the coolant light coming on when it's cold??

Nothing to do with software.

The contacts on the expansion tank become corroded and give false readings, especially when it's cold. New expansion tank sorts it out, and they are around £15 from a dealer.
