Another Newbie to the site with a four year old Skoda Superb (pre 2008 model, but 2.0 PD with PDF).

Recently it has started to warn me of Engine Workshop! and having the flashing glowplug indicator: this occurs randomly and usually after some miles e.g. 20+. It regularly gets motorway runs of 80-100 miles (recent journeys have included Leicester to Yeovil)with the job I have and is rarely used for just "pottering" around towns. I was warned by the Dealer when I bought it that short journeys can cause the PDF to clog up with soot, but told my journeys (mainly motorways and major A-roads over long distances) would mean I shouldn't have problems here, plus I have never seen the DPF warning indicator come on other than part of the normal ignition check sequence when turning on. VAG-COM check via Independant garage suggests this is the case though and they suggest cleaning of DPF required, but worried that I haven't seen any other warning, or been forced into limp home mode via the ECU, so wondering if there are any known faults with sensors or electrics?

I would expect that DPF is checked via ECU for soot levels, and would warn via DPF indicator first and then Engine Workshop and Glowplugs warning would occur only if this had been ignored: I would also expect it to have been put into some osrt of Limp Home mode. The fact it has jumped from nothing to engine warning appears to suggest it either hasn't checked properly, has a faulty sensor perhaps, or something else is causing the problem (other electrical sensors on the same circuit perhaps)?

Garage needs to take another look. It could just be the DPF needs a regen, but doesn't sound like it :S

The other thing to mention is, when you get it sorted, get rid of the car before the oil pump fails, welds the crank to the case and smashes your engine into an expensive pile of useless metal:

Hi Jigger72,

spoke to the Garage and it is the specialist oil that needs topping up for the DPF, which needs to be injected under pressure and then the ECU reset if I understood things properly.

yer thats right dud it takes about 3 to 4 ltr at about £35.00 a ltr you have to top it up every 80.000 miles mate

Thanks, it just so happens that I clocked through 80,000 miles last week when it started happening so it fits in with what you describe

May not help but my 2.5 V6 started showing flashing glow plug and it was due to the brake pedal sensor. Common problem apparently

bewarned fella is it a bss engine coz ive got one of them and my oil pump went and had to have the engine rebuilt and a turbo as well i couldent aford to get rid of it apart from that its a good car but if u can aford it get that oil pump changed NOW mine went at 160.000 miles and yes you do need the dpf fluid topped up every 80.000 miles

There appear to be a number of reasons that the glowplug lights coming on: in my case it was the very expense DPF oil top up (£45 a litre and four litres required!). This had to be done at the dealer and cost me 2 hours of labour (looking at the bill) on top. This seems to require top-up around 80k miles on the 2.0 litre PD model that I have, but I will not have the car by the next time this is due.

As I understand it the 2.5 litre doesn't use the DPF and has a different solution to meeting the EC regulations on Diesel Particulates, so if true, my issue may not be something you will find with your car and the reason for the glowplug flashing will be something else entirely.

There are other reasons why the glowplug lights will flash, including problems with the brake-lights apparently, so I would suggest you get onto someone who has VAG-CON software to diagnose the code from the ECU to give you a better steer. Some of the guys on the site have access to the software and if there is one of them locally to you they may be willing to help out.

Had the DPF taken off my 2.0 tdi, best thing I ever did. 55 mpg now instead of 45 mpg. No problems with Mot, very low emissions. Used NVMotorsport in Birmingham. All sorted and remapped, costs a lot less than a new DPF. And the fuel saving + the extra power. Just brilliant.

Hi ! I m quite agree with Mr. Raptor , as i m also having 2.5 v6 tdi and faced same problem of flashing glow plug and engine workshop sign last month. After diagnose they found that brake pedal sensor's fault. They charged sixty dollars for it. Mr. Raptor how much you paid for that?
