vRS Tyres

Featured Replies

Probably picked up a puncture at the weekend (can't be sure wife has my car in Southampton, I'm in Bristol) and as the exisitng tyres have covered 18000 miles, the fronts are getting worn. What i would like to know is that if you have changed your tyres what have you switched to. If you had the Conti Sport Contact 2 previously, are those that you have changed to, better or wosre or just the same.

Thanks in advance, Jerry

Lots of people with views on tyres and the end of the day it all depends on how you drive and what you are looking for from the tyre. Here’s a couple of tests which may be worth reading.

They are for different size tyres to the VRS but should give you some idea of how they compare. By the way what do you have on at the moment, I’ve done 7500 and down to 3 to 4 mill on the front.

The old goodyear eagle F1 assymetric tyres were awesome and always smatched the top contenders in all reviews even when they were getting old in the tooth.

Every review ive read on the new Goodyear eagle F1 Assymetric 2 tyres has essentially said they are lightyears ahead of the old tyres in all respects. That and the fact that they are only £100 a corner for 215/40R17 sizes make them a no brainer for me.

Continental have stopped producing the Conti-Sport 3's and are now on Conti-Sport 5's. There's still large stocks of the 3 though.

I forund the 3's excellent on my Passat 235/45x17 and the 5's have had outstanding reviews even beating the new Pilot Sports.

If Continental's claim of increased life and less noise over the series 3 is true then the Conti Sport 5 is my next tyre.

Cheers

Lee

I've found the Conti's don't work that well past 3mm. Not sure what to go for next myself tbh. Uniroyal Rain experts are good. Parents have them on their Swift. I'll probably got for Pirelli P Zeros next time or a Michelin.

Martyn iv got pirelli p zero neros on mine and there excessivly loud in my opinion and dire in the wet.... I cant wait to change them

But then again its the only tires iv had on mine so others could be worse as i came from a 60hp polo with **** hot bridgestones on it

Got Conti Sport Contact 3's on mine, no issues :)

thanks all. The latest Evo tyre test put the Conti 3 in front of the other 9 makes they tried. Suspect that is the way i shall go as the Conti 2's i have now have been fine. will take a look at the 5's though i haven't seen any of these in the usual places for tyres (etyres, blackcircles etc.)

Interesting reading the 2011 report as nine of the ten tyres test by Autoexpress were also tested by Evo but the results were quite different. As you say harryweld, 'lots of people with views'.

I am still on the original Conti 3's at 18000 miles, but the majority of my mileage has been to and from work knocking up at least 400 miles a week just doing that. They only get a push at the weekend when I can find some time to play.

These seem to be top tyres(conti contact 3's) but think they got a slating by vrs boys on here for some reason.

I think you'll find that the issues were with SportContact 2

Mine has the above. I'm not a huge fan.

Yeah they were noisy if I remember. I'm really not sure what I'm going for next. I put Bridgestone Potenzas on her A5 once. They were expensive but I have no idea about them. It was the cheapest non budget they had and I'd convinced her not to get budgets.

Hello!

Deciding on which tyres is a real nightmare!

Some manufacturers don't make the size you need.

For example: Continental Sportcontact 5, they don't make a 205/40 17 84W you would have to go for Sportcontact 3.

Tyre reviews give conflicting results.

It's really pot luck, I've been looking for tyres for my estate (205/45 16 83W), most poster's say Michelin's are the best,

great but they only do the Pilot Sport 3 in my size @ £130 per tyre.

Also since your tyres are speed rating w = 168mph, you cannot fit rating v = 150mph even though your car may not be capable of exceeding 120mph.

Because the manufacturer has fitted W rating fitting a lower rating invalidates your insurance.

I plumped for Continental PremiumContact 2 (£98) as they no longer make the SportContact 2 as fitted and SportContact 3 are not made in my size.

I just thought better the devil you know, and it would be the manufacturers standard fitment now, on my car. I read somewhere that 75% of all new cars made in Europe are fitted with Continental tyres.

Cheers!

It depends on what you're after really. The Sport Contact 2 is a good all-rounder, but I myself will (still) be going for the Federal RSR-595 for daily-use.

Loads off grip, works in the wet and to a bargain-price!

As a side-note, I payed 80 £ per tire for my tires, making just about everything expensiver (and less grippy).

And yes, the video off me demonstrating the grip off them when dry (0-100 kph) kinda talks for itself!

You mean the time you achieved or the ESP/TCS light staying OFF? Because I see that you've turned TCS off so naturally nothing would light up no matter how much spin.

I have also achieved a spin-free 0-100 at 6.7" with even the soft winter Nexens I have now, after they had been properly warmed up and it did surprise me.

I am not contradicting your opinion on the federals, not at all, but I would think that this video doesn't really prove anything, especially when TCS is turned off.

One of the guys at work suggested "newton" says thier the best tires hes had, anyone heard of them?

That is with a modified stage 1 software, CAI-kit and TBE with 100 cell racecat.

The tires on the video have had no warm-up at all, just a nice stroll in the suburb.

And the tires aren't screaming (compare to the first clip here, stock car all the way with SC2).

I've had both SC2, PS2 and Hankook RS2.

The RS2 are now on the rear-axle and it's very lively to say the least.

I'll have some proper testing when I've completed the mods for the turbo.

Should be around 300-ish bhp, pretty sure it won't be spin-free with the RSR-595, but hell off alot better then RS2, SP2 and SC2 ;).

I'd still say RSR-595 tho thanks to the grip / money ratio :).

Right, so I consider them as a serious candidate for the next tyre, but I was just wondering how comfortable they are for everyday use because looking at their profile, they seem very track-based and I don't do any track at all. What I'd like, is a lot of grip for the spirited drives and good performance on the wet as it's raining very often here. Do you think they would suit me?

They have been my favourite choice up to now atleast :).

Remember that I live in Gothenburg, Sweden.

A town located at the coast with ALOT off rain and cold rugged weather.

Much alike the weather on your island ;).

EDIT : Only colder!

I am not living in the UK! ;) but still there is a lot of rain throughout the year... Seems they are pretty good for what I want then!

Oh, missed that!!

I'm very satisfied with them, pretty sure you'll be happy :).

I see you don't get any flashing EML or EPC when accelerating hard. Lucky you ;-)
