battery clamp

Featured Replies

Hi folks ihave just bought a battery (Bosch S4008) for my 2002 Superb which Skoda tell me is the correct one for this car, thing is when i came to fit it ( (what a job)the battery clamp- was missing s i got a new one from the Dealer but i cant for the life of me see how it fits

.

I would be very grateful if anyone can help me on this matter and is there an easy way to remove the battery

there should be a bolt hole on the bottom of the battery compartment the clam sits down on a lip on the bottom of the battery and a bolt screws through the clamp into the bolt hole to secure its a little bit fiddly to get the bolt in but if you wedge it into the socket it leaves it easier

thanks for that info is it easier to take the wipers and cowl off to change the battery and does it have to be sealed when put back or will water not get through there into

the pollen filter

I think if you have a diesel superb in these temperatures you'll struggle to get the battery out without breaking the plastic trim under the wipers, so it probably needs to come off. Some claim it can be done though with it on still...

The plastic trim doesn't need to be re-sealed - it fits into a groove on a metal trim at the edge of the windscreen. What you do need to do is make sure the groove and the windscreen around it is spotlessly clean - any grit when you re-fit the trim and push down to seat it in the groove can crack the windscreen.

If you are going to the effort of removing the plastic trim and the wipers, then you should probably consider checking out the pollen filter housing area and re-sealing it. Once the windscreen trim is off it is literally about 5 minutes to sort out.

I would enlist the help of a friend to help lift out the old battery and lift in the new one as its a real back breaker of a job and try first without removing the plastic trim as you might have a problem removing the wipers DO NOT under any circumstances try to prise them off from underneath YOU WILL crack the screen try tapping on the side of the arm but I have had to make a puller for removing VW and skoda wipers they can be so tight, and when removing the trim be careful as its held on by a strip with grips on it pushed down into a groove and can be broken if not removed carefully

I bought a puller for about £13 - my wipers were on solid and I definitely would not have been able to get them off otherwise. This tool is great and made the job super-easy.

I found pulling / wiggling the plastic trim gently at 90degrees to the screen, working from one end worked best for me. You have to first remove the covers on the hinges using a torx driver otherwise you can't get the panel all the way out. There is a metal clip in the centre at the front of the trim which holds it down - I think a lot of people who destroy the trim forget to remove this clip and end up pulling against it. Apparently there should be two clips, but my car only seems to have one.

There are two different clamps, depending on which size of battery you are fitting. From memory, the larger battery fills the battery tray and the clamp fits on the front edge, towards the passenger side. The smaller battery is not as long as the tray and the clamp for this one fits on the passenger side end. If you can't work out how the clamp fits, it's possible you have the wrong one.
