Multiple cylinder misfire?

Featured Replies

Earlier on today, was giving the vRS some beans in third when at about 5000rpm, the car juddered several times. Initially thought it was the traction control but soon realised it was something different when the engine management light flashed about a dozen times before going out. Car drove absolutely normal after that, including during some hard acceleration.

Drove to my mechanic who got the laptop plugged in and looked at the fault codes. It showed that cylinders 1 and 4 misfired at exactly the same time. Unsure as to exactly what caused it and was suggested that it could be a fuelling issue, i.e. due to the cold dense air at this time of year, the pump couldn't provide the fuel needed, hence the misfire. Also, coil packs a possibility although unlikely that two would go at the same time?

Anyone experienced something similar or have any ideas?

I replaced a couple of coil packs on mine, and yes, to my surprise both seemed to fail at the same time.

Did you ever get your car on the dyno to check AFR?

Fuel pump on the TSI is supposed to provide plenty of fuel from what I've read.

Not done the Dyno yet, but was planning to in the near future.

Not sure how the vw ecu is set up... But on the alfa Bosch timing goes from crank sensor to cam sensor at high rpm (5k plus). A dodgy cam sensor gives a misfire on all but doesn't store as a fault - needs live data logging. Bit of an off chance but worth checking.

Ideal, thanks for that. Regarding the fuel pump. Is it possible that the stage 2 map and colder dense air, has pushed it up near the max of its capabilities. I know it's unrated from the tfsi, but it's also putting out more power than a tfsi stage 2.

I've had the same sort of symptom recently although it's between 2800-3100 revs in third gear. The car hesitates as you accelerate through, it's noticeable in fourth as well although doesn't 'surge/hesitate' as bad as third gear.

I wonder if it's the same fault?

If stock pump and injectors can handle a gt30 I think yours should be ok.

When was the last time you changed the plugs?

Cars only on 24k. Not sure if they would have been done yet.

Dont thinkso with the mileage, but could try them first just an idea...cheaper option too :giggle:
