Snap on diagnostics causing limp mode

Featured Replies

hey guys used a snap on diagnostics machines today, cleared my codes. there was a option of checking the actuator so i did. the check took a couple of mins and it checked the glow plugs n75valve egr etc. once this completed it froze. i disconnected the machine and now the car gives a flashing glow plug light, lazy start and is in limp mode. it says some sort of flap is open. can some help me i really dont know what ive done.

Can you find someone nearby who has VCDS (VAG-COM) and pull a full scan of the car? At the moment, we have no clue as to what happened during that diagnostic session..

i dont know what happened. The machine froze, so i unplugged it. Now the glow plug lights flashing, power steering has gone and the cars in limp mode. im going to try and get a vag com connected.

VCDS is a better tool for this kind of thing. :) Even though snap-on tools tend to cost four figure sums.

My guess is the TDI you were testing has a VNT. Instead of slowly increasing the duty cycle when it was performing output tests, the actuator was driven to it's limit. If the turbo was fouled up, it is now jammed. IIRC, it can do the same with a dirty EGR.

I saw this when I was evaluating Verdict.

If you post details of the car (year, engine) and the code someone will tell you what the problem is.

Might he be able to free the VNT manually by working the linkage?

Yes, that's what I had to do (assuming that's what it is).

Sounds about right to me.

It's basically told all the actuators etc to move to the extreme ends of their travel to check the function of them etc. Something has obviously stuck at some point while doing this and the ECU has thrown a wobbly!

i dont know whats happen to it :(. been trying to figure it out all day but no look. i have a egr delete (blt engine) which is causing a eml to show. so i bought a second hand egr from a bkd engine and plugged it in. once i did this i cleared the codes and did a sequential acuator test. it spent 30 seconds on the boost valve and other components. once this was done i started the car and it was taking ages to start! the glow plug light flashing and power steering light. If i unplug the egr theres a buzzing sound. when i plug the egr back in and clear the codes the glow plug and steering light goes away. i checked the codes today, sorry i didnt get to take them down, but it said something to do ith the egr and the boost valve being short to ground?? how do i move the actuator? cars stuck in limp mode.

how do i move the actuator? cars stuck in limp mode.

Assuming a 1.9TDI, I think the actuator is on the underside of the turbo- so the back of the engine. It's easiest to reach from underneath with the undertray off. Look for something like this and give the linkage a pull back and forth.

[edit]

I've seen now it's a 2litre. Think the turbo is still in a similar place.

Sorry about the confusion. The car is a fabia vrs 1.9PD. it has a egr delete also. I tried to see if the actuator was stuck today. got under the car, removed the undertray and pull the VNT rod. It moved about 10mm and does seem stuck. After this the car still seems like its in limp mode. Really dont now what to do know. the egr delete was on the car before i bought it. This problem only occured when i connected a faulty egr in to remove the EML. But now stuck with this problem
