boost question

Featured Replies

Im just curious really, As some may know my vrs has a green pannel filter and comp brake DV and a shark stage 1 remap.

I havent paid too much atention to it over the past few weeks but just thought id ask the question to calm my mind.

When im driving on the motorway and or bypass and decide to put my foot down (normaly 4th and 5th gear) you can hear the DV clearly then you get to around 3-4k revs and the sound changes from a continuous rush through the valve to a kind of intermitant and the power seems to feel like its pulling then 1 sec its not then it is again. its very hard to explain, i did do a code check with the sts unit but havent had any codes come back so im not too concerned. If its loud enough i will try and get a vid that has the noise in to help people.

The whistling noise isn't coming from the DV (thats the whooshing noise you get when you lift right off), its the sound of the air being compressed by the turbo. No idea why it sounds a bit on-and-off at high revs. At that point the wastegate is fully open so its not making any more boost.

If you look at the bottom left graph below (these are from a standard car but the boost graph will look similar on a remapped one just peaks higher and holds a bit better) you can see the boost does go up and down a little bit as it tails off (when the wastegate is open) so maybe this is what you can feel. Boost in Psi on the Y axis and revs on the X axis.

that explains it thanks mate

It shouldnt feel on or off really, not something Ive noticed. Should be smooth.

Sounds like your suffering from surge !!! Was an issue with some maps from certain mappers. You may need to Spk to you mapper

i shall phone shark and have a word seeing as the map was on before i brought the car and i have the sts box

Just phoned up shark, apparently its happened a few 1.8t's they've mapped. I'm booked in for Tuesday 10am for them to have a look, apparently they found the fix was the coil pack loom (I think that's what he said something to do with coil packs anyway) and that fixed it as trying different maps didn't cure it, ill be interested to see what he says :p

it only recently had the coil packs changed under recall, but whatever fixes it fixes it i just hope i dont have to pay :wonder:

I thought I was an ecu file that was causing the issue ??? Never heard of coilpacks causing surge lol

haha thats what he said coil pack loom solved the problem o well i havent a clue if it costs me nothing to fix im happy :p

If its the loom then not really their issue. Youd probably have to get a new one fitted.

Yep you'd have to pay for a new loom. But Awesome sell them for only about £30.

30 isok :)

I have the same surge. Despite repeated emails to Ben and Cheryl @ Shark, they have totally ignored any requests for help. If I wasn't so busy with work right now I'd probably be looking at getting my cash back and going for a Revo map.

went into shark today its all sorted running sweet as a nut now.... they took it in put it on the dyno tweaked the map and it was fixed and running lovely. All for nothing thanks lads, (also got quotes on the work i will be having done at a later date)

Ben urged all those with shark maps who are having this problem to just give him a ring get yourself booked in and they shall sort it, just took a few hours plus its a free dyno run haha !!!!!

I had this problem, and the guys at Shark put shed loads of effort into it, and fixed the problem for me. The original issue was power pulsing at part throttle which was cuased by a bug in th torque modelling in the ecu, and is present even in the factory map, it's just the remap highlights it.

Mine had this, and had the surging at full throttle whcih was fixed by a new n75 valve and tweak to the map.

Please feel free to call the office on 01623 332233 and talk to one of the team. I'm off sick and Cheryl doesn't work for us any more.
