Water ingress in sunroof Yeti: How I solved it (videos included)

Featured Replies

After suffering the dreaded turbo and timing chain issues on our 1.2 TSI, next came the smell of dampness caused by the water in front passenger and back right passenger footwells (what else...?). This time it came after the warranty had expired so it was time for a little DIY...

After reading some very useful threads in this forum I got to know about the problems of some early models with the sunroof water drains.

So I performed the following test:

I poured a bit of water in the sunroof frame on the driver side:

All the water poured came out fine from the drain outlet next to the driver's door hinge.

Next turn was the front passenger's side:

Surprise!! The water didn't come out this time and it accumulated in the sunroof frame instead. According to some threads in the forum, If the sunroof frame becomes flooded, then the water will start leaking inside the cockpit, soaking the footwells. So it seemed to be the case with my Yeti.

Then came the solution. I disassembled the trim panel at the bottom of the passenger's door, stuck my hand in the hole marked by the blue circle and pulled the drain pipe a bit: All the water came out the drain outlet emptying the sunroof frame:

That did it! And now the drain pipe seems to be unblocked!

All I have to wait for now is for the carpeting in the footwells to dry.

Ok, next in the list: the boot light not working despite replacing the bulb...

Did you also check that the rear drain holes that exit in the tail gate area are also clear? It may just be worth a quick check by the same method as you mention the rear passenger side carpet is also wet.

You've probably already solved it...... you'd be very unlucky to have 2 blocked drain hoses but worth checking for peace of mind.

Thanks for the advice, I'll also check the rear drain pipes as I read that the falps of the drains in the tail gate can also be problematic.

About the water in the back passangers footwell, I thought, being in the same side it might have leaked from the front passanger's footwel.

Thread revival!

I've had this problem this weekend, had noticed that inside front windscreen suffers with condensation usually at night.

Checked the footwell carpets an the passenger rear was soaking.

Have checked all the drain holes and the rear left side gushed out of the drain hole when lifting the flap.

So I checked all the others as in the guide above(thanks dhuerva) all now drain properly, hopefully this is now sorted out.

Used a bissell to extract alot of water from the footwell ,will let it dry out and see what happens.

(Note to self) check drainholes on sunroof regularly!

Where are the drain holes for the rear with flaps? Feeling the need to check my flaps too :)

Open the tailgate, top left/right hand corners(near the gas struts) you should see a round rubber grommet (around the size of a 10P)

Should be a small flap in the grommet lift and see if water pours out!

Hmm. I don't seem to have any flaps. Just two round plugs, look a bit like rolo's! Maybe I've had the conversion to drain in the wheel arches. can't see anything under there though.

Thank you for the very helpful advice...After several days of very heavy storms here in the South of France I noticed that the footwells on one side were very wet.

I left the car on a slope overnight to try to "puddle" all the water in one spot.

This morning the water was several inches deep!

I sucked out most the water (5 or 6 litres) using a wet-and-dry vacuum and after consulting this forum and after a test with a bottle of water realised that one of the sunroof drain holes was blocked.

I was not too keen to start dismounting interior panels so I attached a small length of fine plastic tubing to a blower pistol connected to a small air compressor, stuck it in the drain hole and unblocked it in a few seconds!

Thanks again

Peter.

PS

I have now got a ventilator fan and a dehumifier running inside the car.

No grannies and sucking eggs intended but remember that the aircon removes water from the air.  Have it blasting into the footwells when using the car.

I bet you will not have a sun roof again ! I will not anyway, or an indicators switch on the right. It must also have a temperature gauge,a foot rest, and cruise control, to keep the points down !
