How widespread are the oil burning issues?

Featured Replies

Hi,

Was looking at getting VRS ll having owned the VRS SE Mk 1 which i loved and now wish i had not sold.

Was set on a MK ll VRS but after readibg some of the horror stories re the oil new engine ect it is really put me off.

The whole point for me of buying a new car is hassle free motoring for a few years not regular trips to the garage to get to checks.

So how many cars does this affect per say 100 and has the new engine fixed the issue?

Cheers Davie

Welcome to Briskoda.

Are you looking at brand new or nearly new?

If brand new, then the CTHE engine is supposedly much better in terms of oil consumption than the previous CAVA unit. Mine which had the CAVA unit has subsequently been replaced under warranty following marginal oil consumption and a burnt out valve. However, the new unit which is allegedly to the latest spec has used no oil oil in 3500 miles :)

If a nearly new vehicle, then it may well have the CAVA unit installed, but not all have a drink problem, some are actually tea total. However, you should still have a fair chunk of warranty left so that if there are any issues you should have nothing to worry about.

A poll was conducted a few weeks ago by one of the members re oil issues which is worth a look. It is probably a page or two back now.

One possible cause of the excessive oil consumption relates to how the car is driven. Some people conducting a lot of short journeys where it is not possible to flex the right foot very much seem to suffer from a higher oil consumption when compared to those who tend to cover higher mileages and give the engine a bit of a work out every now and again.

Bottom line, its a great little car, handling needs a little bit of work if you are looking at really pushing on, and just have fun safe in the knowledge that there is a warranty to fall back on.

Hi Jerry,

Yeah its a new one i would be looking at getting. Have an Impreza WRX 300 at the moment and running costs are just silly and regret selling my my Mk 1 VRS LE. I think the new Fabia is a steal at 14-15 grand .

Whats the real life MPG?

Dont really push my cars to hard anymore always have the kids or just driving up and down to work but like a bit of acceleration when needed.

as jerry said, the new one will have the CTHE engine, and I don't believe anyone with this engine has had any oil issues yet :) we just put one on the RR too and it made a healthy 183.5bhp at 3,000 miles (no oil used)

Real world mpg will vary from driver to driver, time of year and routes travelled. Other factors such as tyres also have an effect (I found my consumption dropped by 3mpg when I changed from the OEM continentals to Michelin Sport Pilot 3's).

Typically I manage about 35 mpg which covers a mixture of driving. I can sometimes manage 37/38 on a run from Southampton to Bristol provided i do not get too carried away.

Around town I will generally get high 20's, maybe low 30's at a push.

Good car, great car for the money.A set of the factory approved Eibach springs is all you need to change the handling from a bit too soft to reasonable by hot hatch standards.

My latest CTHE engine uses very little oil.

Mpg can vary a lot because there's a world of difference between a 1.4 engine pootling along off boost (expect 45 mpg) and when you're using all 180 hp.Overall you will be above 30.

Even being used to an Impreza you won't be disappointed with the performance,it feels quicker than the book figures and fairly comparable to my 350z.

No know issues with the CTHE then am very tempted now. Any you guys used Drive the deal for your motors?

See if your dealer can match it.Personally I like to keep some goodwill with the local dealer by getting it from them if possible.

I wanted to use my local dealer, but they didn't get back to me even after the test drive and I left two messages for the salesman to call me back.

Phone your next to nearest dealer and tell them you've had poor service from whoever.

They'll fall over themselves to help you because it gives them ammo to slag off their competitor.

I bought from my "next to nearest" with this scenario.

What location?

Be interesting to know the dealer in question we can avoid :)

You'll be fine with any vrs really, you'll soon know if you have a bad one...

North west, where the m62 crosses the m6. Ordered from Doncaster instead, great service and a cracking deal.

Mine is the new CTHE engine and it's been through 3 litres of oil in 2500 miles so far, oil consumption test in a couple of weeks time.

Just out of interest, how many vRS estate owners have oil problems on here? I forget to look at oil threads and whether they are hatch or estate cars. Is the estate much heavier, thus working a little harder? I'm sure that my car tootling around rather than being driven hard is something to do with oil use.

the estate is near enough the same weight.. the saloon has "ballast" to the tune of 25kg I believe

the general consensus is the harder they are driven the less oil they use... not always the case though ....

The estate is slightly lighter than the hatch surprisingly.

I was aware of the claimed oil consumption issues when I decided to go for a VRS II.

I was expecting some oil use, and sure enough I've used a litre in around 3500 miles, which is much better than many, but still fairly high for a modern engine. Mine's an ex-demo so it may be a blessing in disguise having had quite hard, unsympathetic driving for its initial run-in?!

The real question is the longevity of the engine. Lets hope it lasts many many years, despite some of them drinking oil. Mine is nearly on 12k. I bought it on 9k and haven't put any oil in at all. Mine is a 2010 model so prob a very early vrs

46k now, and no oil issues, still haven't topped up since 10k, and mine was all the engine codes that are "the worst" lol......

im currently using a new engine in mine and im ragging the bollloks off it, lets see if this is any better

i really do hope so coz i love the car so fingers crossed otherwise the buggers getting fired ;)
