confused with traction control?

On my vrs cr do I have traction control or esp, or both? Also when I try and turn it off the symbol on the dash just flashes where in my fabia it used to just stay on? Why is this?

"ESP - Electronic Stabilisation Program (incl. ABS, EBD, ASR, XDL and hill hold control)"

 

Anti-lock Braking System (ABS)

When braking, sensors in each wheel measure the road speed.

If one or more wheels start to lock, the ABS reduces brake pressure to

those wheels. This prevents the wheels from locking during heavy or

emergency braking and allows you to continue to steer the vehicle.

 

Anti-Slip Regulation (ASR)

ASR is a switchable traction control system that prevents the

front wheels from spinning under acceleration. When a difference in

driving wheel speed is detected (e.g. due to differences in road surfaces),

the system automatically reduces engine torque accordingly.

 

Electronic Stabilisation Program (ESP)

The ESP is made up of the ABS and ASR traction control systems.

Simply put, it helps ensure that the vehicle goes where you steer it –

even in extreme driving conditions. By constantly comparing the actual

movement of the vehicle with pre-determined values, ESP will apply

the brakes to individual wheels and automatically adjust the engine’s

power output to correct a problem the very moment it arises.

 

Brake Assist

Brake Assist aids the driver during emergency braking by automatically

increasing the brake pressure to a level exceeding the locking limit.

Then, the ABS is quickly brought into the operating range, thereby

enabling maximum vehicle deceleration.

 

Electronic Brake-pressure Distribution (EBD)

This sophisticated system provides an electronic means of regulating the

ratio of front to rear brake pressure. The system automatically varies the

settings according to driving and load conditions to ensure each wheel

is braked to the optimum extent.

 

Electronic Diff erential Lock (EDL)

EDL improves driving and steering characteristics when accelerating

on road surfaces where each wheel has a diff erent degree of traction.

The system operates automatically and is combined with the ABS

system. Using the ABS wheel sensors, EDL monitors the speed of the

individual driving wheels. When a diff erence in driving wheel speed is

detected (i.e. when one wheel starts to spin due to diff erences in road

surfaces, e.g. due to water or dirt) the system brakes the spinning wheel,

transferring engine power to the wheel with the best traction.

 

Extended Electronic Diff erential Lock (XDL)

The Electronic Diff erential Lock XDL is an extension to the EDL function.

When cornering, the XDL responds to the unloading of the front wheel

on the inside of the corner. The ESP hydraulics are used for the XDL

to apply pressure to the wheel on the inside of the corner in order to

prevent wheel spin. This improves traction and reduces the tendency

to understeer. As a direct result of the one-sided and precise braking

pressure, cornering is sportier, quicker and more accurate.

I saw a video on YouTube with Tiff Needell in a Jag on snow/ice showing just what ESP was doing under those conditions. Incredible. 

 

Glad that countries are gradually making it essential in new vehicles.

On a side note, if you disconnect the battery for some reason (I was replacing my Bolero with the Columbus), when it comes back up your dash will say ESP fail probably. Don't panic. I thought I'd right buggered it up. Just drive the car like 50 feet and the error goes.

Back to the original question though, has my car got esp? Is it standard on a 59 plate vrs? And also why does the symbol flash when the button is pressed and doesn't just stay on like it did in my fabia?

Because it does :rofl:

On both my Octavias the dash light flashed when the traction control was disabled, in the Roomster it just lights up!  Perhaps Skoda think that the Octavia needs a little added drama.

All mk2 Octavia vRS's came with ESP, the early ones said ESP on the button, the later ones show the symbol in your photo.

When you press the button it just disables the traction control part of the ESP system, i.e. it lets you wheelspin but it will cut in if you try to go sideways.

The light on the dash should just stay illuminated when you press the button to turn the traction off. (It does on my Octavia Scout IIRC)

 

If it's flashing it may need checking with VCDS?

Hi. Its to do with the model year.

I had a 59 (2010 model year) MK6 Golf, the ESP button had ESP OFF written on it. When you press the ESP off button all it did in fact was turn ASR off (anti skid regulation or traction control in generic speak). Therefore pressing the button leaves ESP entirely enabled but allows the car to wheelspin, essentially limiting any cutting of power when pulling away. My Maxidot used to say ASR Off or something like and the ESP light used to flash all the while.

I later got an identical 10 plate car which would have been a 2011 model yearm the button changed to the picture with off written underneath, when turned off instead of the flashing ESP light I got a permanently on light the same as the pictogram on the button on the dash.

I have a 2013 vRS and it has exactly the same set up as the later Golf except on the maxidot it now shows the image on the button as well as a better description (Traction Control (ASR) off).

The MK6 GTi and GTD's i believe got Sports ESP which by pressing the button for a bit longer also reduced (but didnt turn off) ESP interference which was reflected by a message something along the lines of Sports ESP (limited stability control). Does not do this on the vRS however, dont think the ESP module is clever enough.

essentially your car has ESP, it has the newer switch but the older means on the dash of showing that TC/ASR has been switched off. Nothing to worry about i would suggest

if the ESP light goes out when you start the car and does not come back up flashing again without pressing the ESP off button theres nothing wrong with it. Pull away vigourously and the ESP light should flash indicating the ASR is stopping wheel spin. ESP activity would only really be noticed if pushing ob in bad weather or your attempting to correct a bad error of judgement which results in it kicking in to stabilse the car; Ive actually not really felt XDS doing anything on mine, its either on a very soft setting or disabled, XDS activity is usually indicated by very fast flashing of the ESP light.
