VCDS Steering Assist - Polo GTI Setting

Featured Replies

Has anyone had there vRS steering assist coded to the Polo GTI setting and if so, what effect does it have?

Currently finding the weight when turning quite light and 'skittish' at speed.

Cheers

  • Might I suggest a few things have been misunderstood here.  The XDS is a driver aid designed to make the car more enjoyable at speed, it doesn't reign the car in, it does as LSD's are designed to do,

  • Nah, it only takes a few hundred quid worth suspension upgrades which totally transform it and make the power 100% usable. Hardly a "bankruptcy" cost and then you're just loving it. One could argue th

What were you running before you switched? Have you switched? Sorry I'm quite tired and not sure which way to read your thread. :)

I switched mine and think it feels brilliant compared to where it was set, which was much lighter.

Edit: haha just realised thats my thread you linked to there, thanks George

R4z,  am i right in understanding that the dealer has changed your tyres recently from Dunlop to Pirelli?

Have you used the tyres much yet and got the newness off them,

& have you adjusted the tyre pressures to your needs?

George, your spot on they have.

Put a hundred miles on them and will be adding same again tomorrow so that should have them scrubbed, pressures set so no issue there.

There seems to less weight in the steering than when I had the dunlops on the same pressures but, maybe that's down to the pulling to the left that was causing increased resistance?

No not changed from factory default, would you say after changing that the steering weight is progressive as speed increases?

Maybe let your tyres mature a bit more, to me they are skittish compared to the Dunlops.

Just try the resetting of your Steering assist and see if you like it or not.

It does not suit everyone.

Thanks for the advice, maybe a characteristic of the tyre then?

I'll give it some more mileage and come back to it down the line.

This is my only gripe about the Briskoda forums. Take this as constructive criticism, and it is something I'd like to help with.

There are threads about what VCDS things you can do with the respective cars, but for me, in the Fabia 2 Section there should be a sticky that says 'Fabia II VCDS Options' And then a list, and explaination of how to for each code.

Granted, this is a community forum, so I'm just as liable to sort this as any other guy, but I'd like to see a list of these sort of 'Must Do' mods. Surely all of us would want the GTi steering setting, else why did we buy the vRS !!?

I'm not really even sure of what all the options are, and lots of threads point back to Fabia Mk1 VRS stuff. Surely some of this will be different (MaxiDot options for things like turning off Bluetooth Phone pairing bong, MPH display in the centre, etc) so you end up not really having a clue what to say.

Short version - I'm an idiot, I want this to be easy !! :p

Edit - quick side note - I've just changed from Conti Sport Contact 2's - what my car came with new, to Goodyear Eagle F1 AS2's. Wow. Seriously huge improvement. Loads more feel. Part of me hopes I don't have the GTi setting so I can improve things further !

Its not quite that simple with VCDS. Different cars (even the same model and spec) can have different controllers with small or large differences. Also most people who have VCDS are fairly proficient with it and tend to end up doing the same things on many cars. Ross tech also are very helpful.

conanius,

If you want to make up a Post on the subject and have it Pinned, then request that from 'The Management', PM them maybe.

We bought a vRS that came new from the Factory on the steering setting.

there are choices, like the 'Handicap/disability' setting to give more steering assistance. Or more Braking Assistance

Things like GTI/RS setting which gives less assistance need consideration, and everyone might not want that setting just because it sounds sporty. Some might feel less assistance is not an Improvement, just an adjustment to suit their needs or likes.

Maybe just because they want to try they will and stick with it or not.

Maybe as they put on Winter Tyres or Narrower Tyres they might consider it.

The tyre change can make the Assistance feel like too much.

Most owners have no access them selves to change settings and require someone to do it.

Just talk through the options you think you might want with someone with the equipment and the knowledge.

Some buying used cars really need checked what settings or changes have already been done to the car,

ie, Steering, Braking, XDS etc. They may no longer be on Factory Settings.

But they do provide us with a very effective search function

I find most things are there and will have multiple threads about it.

When we adjusted my car it took ten minutes, my friend ran the laptop with vagcom and he had never tweaked a Fabia before, I sat next to him with an iPhone and the Briskie search function and we figured everything out stupidly easily.

Thanks for the info guys.

Don't see this as me being annoying on purpose, it's just an observation based on other forums I've used in the past.

I didn't realise that cars of the same model and spec could be coded differently, I guess this is my lack of knowledge on VAG stuff showing through !

Sparkly - Just seen your Sig and mods list. As its relevant and handling related, will you get the Super Pro Polybush kit with Antilift? I think with a proper set of adjustable settings there is a chance of some significantly improved handling on the Fabia combined with the H&R RARB and Springs.

I have a fair size shopping list

That does feature

One version of the steering controller in the Octavia II comes with four versions of software, 3 of which work with cruise, one doesn't.

Is this setting worth doing? Would a dealer agree to tweak it on a routine service do we think?

Yes its worth doing IMO.

Dealer told me it cant be done and came out with some technical abs and airbag stuff which clearly wasnt true.

So i took mine to a tuning specialist who charged me £30 for various vcds changes.

Its not really apparent around town i dont think, but is much more sensitive at higher speeds :)

Interesting. My local dealer also told me at first service (a couple of weeks ago) that the steering setting could not be adjusted because the vRS has 'hydraulic steering and not electric, so there is no adjustment'.   <---- Fills me with confidence!

Its all a load of crap because they cant be bothered mate.

Theyd soon do it if you were handicapped and needed it lighter.

Same here: "master technician" claims it's impossible, and looked at me condescendingly. I left him to his smug self. They have a bit of paper that tells them they know it all, so no customer is going to put them right...

The problem is the dealer tool (VAS-PC) does not allow the technicians to alter all settings, some things can only be done with VCDS at a specialist.

But a dealer is capable of changing it for a handicapped person are they not?

Yeah. I didnt want someone touching my car that could make up, or even believe such a thing.

VAS may simply present a "steering for disabled driver" setting and not the actual settings.

VAS is a bit more fisher price than VCDS.

Ahh :).

Still no need for the abs, airbag safety issue rubbish haha.

No but the service staff seem to need to provide an explanation with as much techno babble as possible, even if it is complete ****.
