Timing belt or chain?

Recommended Posts

Hi all

Have just discovered this site and signed up for Freedom as well.

My question - our Skoda is a late 2008 1.6 Petrol Tiptronic Estate. Does it have a timing chain or belt?. A search around the web  gives conflicting answers so am well confused.

Jim is correct, it has a chain. I have a '59' plate Fabia estate with the 1.6 16v tiptronic engine/box and it has a timing chain. It requires no maintenance but the tensioner should be checked at higher mileages and changed if it becomes noisy.  The way to tell if your engine has a chain or belt is....from the front of the car look at the left hand end of the engine. At the left side of the valve cover if the end engine cover (where the timing chain or belt lives) is metal, it's a chain. If it's plastic, it's a belt.  Keep posting to let us all know how you are getting on with your car.
