extended warranty

Featured Replies

I've just extended my warranty for 1 more year plus roadside assistance following a reminder from skoda. My cars a 59 plate 1.2 so I thought I'd rather be safe than sorry. I've had the car a year now and maybe I'll keep it 1 year more all being well.

How much did it cost?

Who is the extended warranty underwritten by? (which warranty company)

This was covered, in some depth, in these two topics.  Maybe a kind mod might consider lumping them together, along with this most recent addition.

As per my most recent post on the subject I've arranged cover with the CSMA at £144 for 13 months cover - due to start well in to the new year.

I can see that cover/exclusions is very similar but the policy isn't identical.  The CSMA Car Care Plan Car Warranty scheme and the Skoda Approved Extended Warranty scheme are both arranged via Car Care Plan in Thornbury, West Yorkshire but where the Skoda plan is underwritten by Elvia Travel Insurance Co. Ltd.  the CSMA scheme is underwritten by Motors Insurance Co. Ltd.

The cost of the plan is one difference - see above.

By comparing the two policy booklets/terms and conditions (I have both) it would seem that other differences would include :-

Skoda plan covers 4x4 at no charge - CSMA says "you will have to pay an additional charge for vehicles over 2500cc and 4x4's" ....(I haven't pursued this in detail as I have 2WD but suspect it wouldn't amount to much - if anything).

Cat. Converter covered by CSMA - not covered by Skoda plan.

Vehicle recovery included in both but it offers an extra £20's worth of cover with CSMA (Not a deal breaker).

Can use non Skoda garages with both plans but approval required beforehand with both. Both will settle direct with Skoda dealers if the dealer is registered with CCP. (Not all are)

Skoda plan offers overnight accommodation if car disabled due to an eligible claim - CSMA doesn't.

Both plans state diagnostics are excluded.  I queried that but didn't really understand how they fix something if they haven't diagnosed what's wrong with it - but it would seem that people don't routinely get a bill for diagnostics when fixing stuff that is actually covered.  Someone brighter than me might get to the bottom of that one.

Cambelt covered on both plans.

The CSMA gets good reviews on other motoring forums...no worse than the Skoda scheme, it would seem.  The bloke on the phone was helpful - but that proves nothing.

CSMA membership is 'restricted' but I suspect that anyone who knows the lady up the road whose sister in law knows a man who used to work for the GPO in 1934 - is eligible.  As it happens I did legitimately qualify as I worked for the Post Office Telephones in 1973 but I suspect half of their applicants did (or didn't) do something similar...or one of the other dozen or so qualifying occupations. Details on their website.

The cost and who underwrites the Skoda UK policies was covered?

OK, sorry I mentioned it...I won't do it again.

It was only a question. :)

The cost was covered in great depth I'd have said...and I thought I mentioned who the underwriter was way back...but If I didn't then, I have now :-)

EDIT.  Just seen that I've mentioned vehicle recovery above and should clarify that one.  I referred to cover applicable to a breakdown caused by a warranty eligible fault and this is just £60 worth of cover (£40 with Skoda)....but not to be confused with the RAC Breakdown and Recovery which is completely separate and isn't available at all with the CSMA - but is, as we know, an option, at varing cost, with the Skoda plan.

CSMA do a full European Breakdown  and  Recovery service with Britannia.

When my three years is up I'll probably use the AutoAid pay and claim breakdown/recovery service at £39 a year.  Been using them since 1984 and had a couple of claims in that time and they've been fine.

CSMA do full European breakdown and recovery, not just recovery :)

I stand chastised and suitably corrected  :-)

Hopefully you'll have checked all my other facts and figures and found them to be correct then?   :-)

Great post BTW! It's good to see a decent comparison of products like you have done...

I recently took purchased 2 year's cover Skoda Approved Extended Warranty and Assistance for my Octavia II, commencing when the original 3 year warranty ends on 18 December. No inspection was required as the car was still under that warranty. The Extended Warranty is underwritten by AGA International SA and administered in the UK by Car Care Plan Ltd.

I was quoted £600 over the phone for that cover. When I visited the dealership 2 weeks later to complete the paperwork and pay, the new in post sales manager admitted that he had got the price wrong and that it left very little profit. To his credit he honoured the quote, and I in turn agreed that I would not publish details of the dealership involved!

Having contacted 7 dealers for quotes, I think that £650 would have been a competitive price for the cover I wanted. Progress Skoda in Letchworth quoted that, whereas Wing of Peterborough quoted a whopping £864. I asked for quotes with and without Assistance, and the additional cost varied between £50 and £145.

P.S. No reminder received from Skoda UK about the availability of this warranty.

I just had a reminder from skoda so I di it through them. The week before I got a letter from the breakdown company asking to renew my roadside assistance. They wanted £120 for the year. I agreed and sent off my details then later I had a letter from skoda offering the extended warranty for 1 year for £399 plus the roadside assistance only £49. So I took that and then had to cancel first cover. I'm planning on keeping the car a year more unless something catches my eye.
