  • So did mine, free clean of your shoes every time you get in the car. Simply Clever.

  • Right. Today I spoke to one of the UK technical specialist bods via SUK who have been chasing down a couple of niggles on my VRS.   *CATEGORICALLY* And I quote. "The doors holding water back is by d

Both my fronts keep water when the car is washed

Yep, perfectly normal and doesn't cause any problems, my mkII did it aswell.

Drivers door is way worse at keeping hold of water than any of the others on my VRS.

My Mk2 does this too, the water is released as soon as I open the door.

Never had this with my Mk2 but heard that it can be an 'issue' on the Mk3. Not sure whether this causes any issues

Yep, mine is affected too, dealer already had one attempt to sort but drivers door still worse than ever, it is NOT normal and SWMBOs MkII does not do it! When I was ill recently, I did not move the car or even open the doors for over 2 weeks and the water level in the drivers door had found it's way into the inner sill, filled the channel in the rubber seal and some had found its way into the foot well area and under the mat was damp. Seems to be worse at home as my drive slopes down slightly so water collects at the hinge end of the door and not all drain holes function unless on the flat.

I've had 3 mkii's and none of them have done it

I had 2 and both did it, so did my mkI Fabia vRS, my brothers mk6 Golf GTD does aswell.

I understand your point that it appears to be a common fault but that does not mean that it is acceptable and should be brushed off as normal. I feel a diy fix coming on, probably just need a few small holes in the rubber seal near to the hinge end of the door, I'll give the dealer one more chance to fix when it goes in for 20k service next month, and then if still no better, I'm getting my drill bits out!

But it's just water on paint, I only get the water being held by the door when it's been raining in which case the whole car is also wet....... I'm not going out for a giant unbrella!

Did you not read my post above re water finding it's way into drivers footwell? No car should do this, even if it was parked up for 2 weeks!

Yes just washed my mk3 estate and when I opened the front passangers door out ran some water. Seems to be related to angle/slope of the road thst you are parked on and as Matt Pez points out above, if you leave your mk3 for a week or more parked on a slope she can trap water to the point of it coming in.

The proplem seems to be with the front doors and if you park on a bit of a slope as when you drive in the rain you would not notice the water pooling in the door seals or it more likely runs out with the movment of the car, as it would have done under test drives before we got our grubby mits on them.

Answer to this proplem is to open the front down hill door after heavy rain, what a pain !!

Colin

Possibly to do with the prevailing direction of wet weather, in this country it's usually from the West and South West. I find my driver's door is worse when parked up at home as that side is more exposed to the West.

Mine does it too, both front doors.

Water ingress? A VAG group car Achilles heel!

as above all my mk2`s have done this, its the outer seal on the door frame to the sill that stops wind noise is good so therefore wont let water out either, clears when door is open,i dont expect the mk3 to be any different, probably if it didnt stop water draining, there would be complaints about wind noise in the car

Ok then, sounds like I need to take SWMBOs MkII in for adjustment cos it does not hold water and who ever owns my old MkII Superb needs to take that in too cos it never retained water either!

Should've rejected them because of leaky door seals

It's only a problem when it freezes as we all know water expands when frozen, we've not had a bad winter this year so I've only seen my retained water turn into ice once so far.

Damn good point!

...and when you get appendicitis so don't get to open your car doors for two weeks during the worst two weeks of wind and rain this winter!

Mine does this I noticed this weekend too. Would be good to see how many do this!

No it's a special feature designed to keep the interior clean by washing your feet on entry. It's also doubles as part of the stability system. It moves the water around as you corner to improve weight distribution and grip. The system was first developed for German submarines.

Seriously though it's a ridiculous design flaw.
