Just test drove vrs few questions pls

Featured Replies

Hi folks

Just back from driving 3 year old 2011 20k mile vrs estate

Ok, first question. When accelerating from standstill (in gear foot on brake) is it normal to feel a very slight momentary delay on taking up drive? I assume this is a small DSG idiosyncracy....

I didn't use the manual mode but otherwise the 'box seemed to work well

How popular and what is the general consensus on the metallic green(no white roof)? I think I like it but is it popular enough not to make the car hard to sell if I decided to sell the car? I don't think I've seen many green ones around...

Lowering. Really think it needs lowered. I don't really want to sacrifice ride quality from how it is and am likely to be carrying at least washing machine weight quite often, maybe sometimes heavier 80-90 kg's.

Is this achievable just with a set of springs? What do you think/advise?

Lastly, anyone know how much a back bumper cover costs and how they come (do they come primed in plain black..)? I have annihilated the bumper cover in scrapes on my fabia 1 in a year so it's crossed my mind taking off the good one and keeping it safe...!

Thanks

This will be the one at Evans Halshaw i take it.

It looks very clean and neat.

Estates do not come with White Roofs, or Black.

The Delay is normal, stops the wheels spinning once you get used to it.

Once you drive a while the DSG will behave as you want.

So you need a 12 month Warranty.

You need to Check the Service History,  & Warranty History,

& has the car required the Latest Service Campaign on the DSG,  Mineral oil & ECU Update.

..............................................................................................

*You want to know if it had an Oil Consumption Test and Breather Valve/PIpe Mod &

ECU Update as a Warranty Issue, or even as a Goodwill Gesture, if it has walk away,

Unless it resulted in it getting a New Engine Fitted.*

So Service History should be.

1st Minor Service @ 1 Year.

2nd Major Inspection Service @ 2 years, Pollen Filter, & ECU Update.

3rd Service now, Minor, & Brake Fluid Change,  Try to get them to fit new Spark Plugs.

ECU Update & DSG Service Campaign work if required.

Done at a Skoda/VW/SEAT/Audi Workshop.

If they can not tell you the Service & Warranty History, Skoda UK Customer Services can.

If still in the 3 year Warranty, get anything done, Badges Changed if not looking great,

Wheels checked to see if any Corrosion Showing.

(Cancel that it has Black Gigaro wheels,  Check the Tyres, see they are 4 matching tyres.)

You can get back Bumper Protectors in Black for the Hatch,

I imagine you can for the Estate, but someone can confirm.

If not, its easy enough with a Rattle Can of Plastic Bumper Paint to turn one Black.

Lowering Springs are available.

You need the Estate ones for the rear.

Best try a washing machine in first & drive through Leith or Granton.

16" Rims and suitable tyres might be a better plan.

Thanks v much for seriously informative reply

Yes indeed Evans Halshaw and Yes indeed clean car almost as new albeit rusty discs and one rough kerbed alloy. I doubt getting offered much in the way of a decent warranty as you can probably imagine

Seems not too bad a price but they won't be likely to budge much. One yellow one on AT with lower mileage same age at main dealer they might match though

First two services at West End Skoda and third dubious one at an unspecified Arnold Clark so no idea what was wasn't done. Given a story about elderly last owner not liking it much....

You're saying walk away if it DID end up with the breather valve/pipe mod update, and not a new engine, not this not being done?

I'll check out the exact registration date for any real remaining warranty.

Again, many thanks. Deffo interested in the car sort of 50/50! Do think I need to chew it over a little

You can buy a 2 year Extended Skoda Approved Warranty for £547 or less direct from Car Care Plan.

But,

The car needs not to have outstanding issues.

So a call to Skoda UK Customer Services on Monday and you can check.

I might be able to look at it on Monday Afternoon. I will give you a shout if i do, but since you drove it,

its probably fine as is.

It could be a good enough car,

but really the correct Service Schedule for the 3rd Service is Important.

A new fitted engine already in the car should not be a problem.

(a good thing IMO, Car punted after that and now with Evans Halshaw)

A Car thats had the Oil Consumption Test & Breather Valve Mod normally needs an Engine in the end.

Warranty Work Started and not finished, car punted to be shot of,

so this is a Problem on an Extended Warranty.

Phone skoda UK and get the warranty claim history mate. If there is any suggestion of oil issues walk away. Quickly.

The only exception is as George said -'if it's had a replacement engine it might be sorted. Especially if the replacement was several thousand miles ago and no recorded problems since.

The estate vRS is a great piece of kit. Very practical and with a decent turn of speed. The ride is the Achilles heel tho. I'd think very carefully before lowering it if you value ride comfort (unless improved handling is a necessity).

Tuppence worth from someone who has test driven a vRS three times now, from different dealerships in different parts of the country but plans to wait for the next generation Mk.III Fabia Estate with the 140bhp engine and a decent warranty . . . or . . . buy a low mileage, late model vRS when the price falls through the floor ;)

  • Phenomenal acceleration!
  • DSG box takes some getting used to but is quite brilliant, perfect for commuting in town
  • Ride acceptable on Motorways and decent roads but AWFUL over potholes and speed humps
  • A lot of road and noise at all times, even cruising at 70 - not really great :(
  • Estate has loads of space and looks nicely inconspicuous
  • Fairly basic base spec for a modern car - even with add-ons

To be honest, nice though the Mk.II vRS is, it is somewhat unrefined and could have been so much better.  The earlier CAVE engine does appear to have had an unacceptable number of problems with excessive oil consumption - the CTHE may be better, it's impossible to judge.

£10k for a 20,000 mile model sounds OTT.

Incidentally, I can't imagine why you would want to lower the suspension unless someone in your family is a chiropodist!

Price, check out Autotrader examples and Skoda website for establishing a realistic market price. Then take off about £500 > £1000.

Get extended warranty thrown in for at least a 12months via Skoda.

@ post  # 6.

Why would someone want their Toe Nails trimmed or hard skin removed because they drive a mK2 Fabia vRS.?

(i get a 50 % discount from my Chiropodist!.)

Evans Halshaw is pile them high and shift them.

Without travelling there is not lots of Estates in Scotland.

This one was first Registered in Edinburgh, and is a good looking car at the price IMO.

If it is a good one, the price is not too high IMO,

(£9,500 max)

THERE IS THE WHITE ESTATE 'THOMPSON AND POTTER' WERE SELLING ON ITS 3rd ENGINE,

(something which they seemed to not mention to prospective buyers that went to look at it.)

Obviously money off is good if you can get it,

But in this case the Salesperson can say, 'These are Like Hens Teeth'.

Then you can say,

'Yes, but how are Hens Teeth Selling when Out of Warranty with possible issues?'

george

Squint rear number Plates Annoy me,

£200 off just for that IMO.

Ha Ha too right it's the spirit level out for my numberplates!

Thanks to you all for replies. Really, I appreciate the excellent advice on it.

I knew of DSG 'box woes but was unaware of engine foibles too. Not great. This in conjunction with topping up oil even if all is ok has put me off. I am possibly guilty of a bit of OCD on this and can see a large round of paranoia coming my way starting to worry about oil consumption...(see below re BMW I had)

Do think they look too high with such low prof tyres sitting over 2" under the bodywork

Main things that have put me off are

-I personally wasn't bowled over with the driving experience for spending nearly £10k (a good used 3 Series touring could be gotten...). Bit of a lack of refinement and felt little different to steer than my Fabia 1 1.4 mpi. Not saying not good fun but I was just left a little bit uninspired by the drive.

- I was embroiled with BMW a few years back about engine trouble/warranty etc. Nightmare. The vague thought is enough to put me off

-Would prefer buying from a franchised dealer with proper warranty included at this age/price. Even discounted new might be almost as good a proposition..?

Been really delighted with my old Fabia 1 which is what made me consider this car. I might be better waiting a bit and going for a diesel fabia 2 estate at some stage.

What engines are known to be totally robust??

I didnt get a chance to look on Monday, but i was at the Sighthill Branch. (& KFC)

Anyone can buy a BMW or any other car, but the Twinchargers are fun,

and there is not going to be similar cars again i suspect.

I intend enjoying them while they are available.

Maybe check out the Seat Ibiza ST's if you need the room.

You might find newer and Much Cheapness.

Or Ibiza FR 150 ps Petrols with DSG,  they are a good buy IMO,

not 180 ps,  but you would hardly notice.

No idea about Diesels,

but check out 'Brimma's' build thread in the Projects.  Estate, Diesel & Mapped.

PS

I have seen an Estate that could be a Bargain if bought as a Keeper.

SEAT Exeo ST 2.0TD, i have seen some with Asking Prices that look OK to me.

Might be able to purchase my company car in a couple of weeks (to sell on) - July 2012 Estate in Race Blue although 60k on the clock (one new engine, turbo and cat due to valve failure and no oil consumption issues) and an accident with a wild boar to (possibly) count against it.  No idea of price yet though..

Many thanks but I think I'm going to just go for keeping the old trusty steed mpi estate in the meantime
