Looking at Fabia 1.9 TDi PD - How new can I go without DPF?

Hello Everybody,

Looking to buy a Fabia Estate (hatch not big enough) and really like the 1.9 TDi engine. My dad has an X reg Octavia estate 1.9 TDi and its a great car just gone over 100k and I've driven it many times. Its really an old work horse and he's used it to pull a great big heavy trailer. Frequent oil changes have probably saved it as he's never had engine or turbo problems - just a clutch + DMF at about 85k which is not surprising really given the trailer!

I'd like a Fabia Estate 1.9 TDi and want to go as new as possible without getting a car with a DPF. I'm self employed so work varies and I could have a spell of doing a lot of short journeys so am keeping clear of DPFs. From my research I can see the Fabia had the 1.9 TDi PD engine right up until 31st May 2010 on the 3 and the Scout. They stopped with it a month earlier (up until 30 April 2010) on the Fabia 2.

I'm not interested in the 80bhp of the 1.4 TDi PD so its definitely got to be the 1.9. Am I right to assume I can look at cars right up until the end of the production date as they are all Euro Emissions Standard 4?

Many thanks in advance for any advice and Happy New Year :cocktail:  ..... Jayne

Many thanks for the replies. That's what I thought - I will steer clear from the higher bhp's and also anything with the word 'Green' (Greenlline) in it!

I'll have a good look at the owners handbook if i go to view a car to make sure there's no mention of a DPF light on the dash,

Happy Motoring.

The 1.9pd is best of the bunch IMO.

Aslong as its been serviced correct and looked after you should have no problems. The rest of the car should start to get tired before the engine tbf.

As im sure you already know as you're looking for a 1.9. The 1.9pd was replaced by the 1.6CR. Quieter, more refined etc but more complicated in order to make it run cleaner (does have a DPF) and likes to be revved abit more for the best fuel efficiency.

I think youd be better off with the 1.9pd. Just gotta find a decent one (:

None of the Skoda 1.9PDs ever had a DPF fitted, unlike in VWs and Audis.

Don't dismiss the 1.4 so casually, its quite a nice engine actually and doesn't have a DMF, so one more thing that won't go wrong with it. It may be lower power, but its also lighter and less complex.

Just the greenline one that has a dpf isnt it?

Many thanks again for the replies. Yes you just confirm my thinking - its got to be the 1.9 TDi PD. Will be looking for one that's had frequent oil changes. That's the one and only thing my dad has been good at doing with his X reg Octavia estate 1.9 TDi - apart from that he's not shown it much love but he's the 1st to admit its a damn good car.

As for the 1.4 TDi PD well it wont be making it onto my list -. 80 bhp and 13.3 secs to get to 60 mph .... life's just too short. Looking at the figures that's as fast as it goes compared to 105 bhp and 10.6 secs with the 1.9. (Forgot to mention I've been looking in the Performance Upgrades section .... all new to me but very interesting ..... I never knew what a remap was until today .... heavens knows what the husband will say!)

I just need to make sure the boot on the Fabia estate is big enough so will go have a look at a local one just to get an idea on size - if its not big enough then I'll be looking at the Octavia estate (1.9 TDi PD of course).

Happy New Year to you all  :cocktail:  :cocktail:  :cocktail:

Yes they do seem to tune well. Theres a mk1 fabia vrs (they run the 1.9 pd 130bhp) which is running around 300bhp i think.

Id think the more you tune it, the more its stressed so the less long the engine is likely to last, id of thought.

Happy new year to you too

Its all new territory to me this tuning but rather interesting. I must admit my Skoda Roomster 1.6 has got a bit boring (the dog wanted it coz its easy for him to get in + out of). I'm going to have to have a nose through the Forum to learn more in relation to tuning the 1.9. I suspect my ideas on tuning are a bit tame compared to where some of these guys go with this!

But nevertheless it would certainly get me and the dog to his daily walks at the wood or the reservoir a bit quicker!  :D

Hello Jayne,

Have you also considered changing to a 1.9PD Roomster, again no DPF and the 105bhp is a solid ("single mass") flywheel, I've had mine "attended to " by Darkside Developments near Barnsley, they are a top specialists at remapping and other upgrades for the VAG diesels, they told me that VW are very conservative in their quoted outputs, mine as bog standard before tuning was already giving 117bhp!!!

Am using Millers Oil (from Brighouse) and their EcoPower Max diesel fuel additive, also a standard paper element air filter as recommended by Darkside (to keep the MassAirflowMeter wires clean; the replacement types that can be cleaned and re-oiled tend to leave deposits on the fine wires in the MAF).

I asked for an economy-biased map, the figures speak for themselves.

Around town and at low revs it's pretty normal, go above 2,000rpm and things get interesting......!

BTW if you're considering a remap, check things out first with your insurers, best to agree a % power increase with them, then get your chosen mapper to stick to that.  I did get my first Skoda, a Fabia Mk1 1.4PD, remapped too, VERY vibratory at low revs, amazing MPG!

I searched for my Roomster (and it's predecessor the Mk 1 Fabia) via AutoTrader, if you register you can narrow the search down by specifying more criteria, eg. colour.

And you'll already be aware of the need to find one with roof rails if you want to use roof-bars; don't know if that applies to the Mk2 Fabia Estates.

Worth checking the "console bushes" in the front suspension, they fail gradually and lead to wandery steering over bumps, I've had heavy-duty ones fitted, found via internet from a Huddersfield carspares place, German make Mehle or Mahle I recall.

Excellent value, and has sharpened the steering up nicely.

Best wishes, keep us posted.

Richard

The 1.9 PD105 comes as standard with a DMF (Dual Mass Flywheel) but a SMF (Single Mass Flywheel) can be fitted.

Your best options for tuning is just a remap tbh. The 1.9 will nicely remap to around 130-140bhp.

As above the roomster was available with a 1.9 if you're happy with the car otherwise.

Also consider the MK2 Octavia hatch/estate. They can be had for good money these days and they're a hell of a lot more car than the Fabia/Roomster with a much more planted chassis etc.
