Fitting smaller wheels / tyres on Mk. II VRS

Featured Replies

I am fed up with the harsh ride I get from my standard Mk. II VRS tyres.

If possible I would like to replace the rims and tyres with 15" diameter.

The spare is 195 - 55 - R15, can I replace the standard wheels and tyres with 205 - 55 - R15?

If so can anyone make any recommendations as to rim and tyre?

PLEASE!

Yes, you can fit 15" 205/55 tyres.

I used a set of 15" rims from a 1999 A3. fitted with Tomahawk tyres (cheepness). The ride is A LOT less harsh, with very little road noise compared to std. The downside is the car feels less planted as there is a lot more flex in side wall of the tyre.

205/55/15 would be the wrong size. You need 205/60/15.

Actually 205/55 R 15 might be perfect measured side by side.

The numbers show a bit taller, (Total Diameter / Rolling Circumference.)   so compare the 205/55 R 15 side by side with your 205/40 R17's

You can get the correct Speed /Load rating for the vRS in that size.

Thanks for that Kuoki link

It suggests that 215/50/R15 would be the correct size.

Rolling radius of 187.18 cm for 205/40/R17 and 187.24 cm for 15".

Is there anything else I should consider - e.g. Insurance?

I am probably not overly concerned about any minor impact on handling but certainly still worth bearing in mind.

But not an approved size. My car is fitted with 205/60/15

But your car seems to be a 4x4 mkII Octavia Estate, not a Mk. II Fabia VRS.

I do not think you want to go fitting 215 tyres.

The 205/

45 R17 dependent on Brand & Tread can be identical in size other than the Rim size to a Pirelli 205/40 R17 which is

a ickle bit taller than a Dunlop Sport Maxx 205/40 R 17

Call into a Tyre Fitting Centre and let them show you new tyres on their Tyre Racks, and compare side by side with what you are replacing.

Whoopsie, I misread and thought it was the Octavia forum [emoji17]

Be sure to get the right wheel offset, check out www.willtheyfit.com

What sizes are listed on the inside of the fuel filler flap?

If the spare is 195/55R15 that'll probably be the smallest size you can fit, and possibly the only size that allows the use of snow chains. Skoda in Germany publish a document with all the wheel & tyre combinations that are recommended - the current issue is from July 2014 - so you can look it up.

If you think 195/55R15 is too small to use on your car, you'll probably be shocked that we're running 185/55R15 on our Mk1 vRS and, apart of the steering being excessively light at low speed, we think the car feels much nicer than 205/45R16 - better ride, and much better driving experience.

195/55 R 15 is the size of the spare wheel and is almost an identical Total Diameter & Rolling Circumference to the standard

205/40 R 17's on the MK2 vRS

The Width is obviously less and there is less tread on the ground, the size /height is the difference between oo and ah.

The Steering Assistance can be reduced to have the steering feel less light if you do fit 195 or even 185's

the 205/55 R 15 with the correct Speed & Load Rating is actually fine on a Mk2 vRS

The biggest size given by Skoda in the Owners manual for using when fitting snow chains is 6J 15 with 185/55 R15

One of the reasons for the crappy comfort is down to the stock shockabsorbers and springs.
They manage to be harsh when you're driving along and soft when you push the car!
Talk about progressive in the wrong way.
The Weitec GT-suspensionkit is much smoother when running over speedbumps and when you really push it, it gets ALOT better than stock.
An upgrade I vouch for since the handling is... well, rubbish :D!
