Major Fabia VRS TSI (cave engine) issue

Featured Replies

Evening all, new to this forum and I whole heartedly apologise for making my first post a rant!! The previous owner had stuck a few subtle Briskoda stickers on the car so I'm guessing he/she must have been a member at some point too, so technically the car is sort of returning home haha!!

Basically though, I have owned the Fab for nearly two years and it honestly has been a pleasure to drive, but it's recently picked up the engine illness I have read so much about, mostly on here. I realise this has been trawled to death, so I'll apologise again for raking up old graves, but I need to try and find out if I have leg to stand on with Skoda.

It's a late 2010 model with 42k on the clock. Bit of research before buying the car had given me the insight to the oil consumption and that hasn't really bothered me as it hasn't been too alarming, but recently I had noticed the coolant level had dropped. Topped this up, as you would, but driving it the other day the car started to splutter and went in to limp home mode. Got it home and looked into it, and realised it has been showing all of the characteristics of the fatal TSI engine issues.

The garage have come back to me today and have said the engine is kaput, new one is needed!!

This is where my case might fall down some what though. The Fab does have service history, but only up until 24k, and none of the previous services were carried out at Skoda dealerships. The only time the car has visited them is to have the DSG gearbox oil replaced which was part of a recall in 2014.

Now I full well know that of a car of this age and mileage should not really be prone to a complete engine fail and I believe that VAG are fully aware of these engines being prone to this issue, but have they admitted to the fault? I just need to know if I have any leg to stand on with getting it sorted and the next path to take.

Any help is greatly appreciated and I apologise for a third time at such a repetitive and boring opening post, Si.

Welcome to the forum.

There is a Pinned Post up the page then the dozens of Oil Consumption and Spark Plug threads.

That about covers it,

No Warranty and no Full Service History is a problem you need to have dealt with at Skoda UK Customer Services.

The Coolant Drop is not part of the usual issues.

Spark Plugs failing or 1 plug is, and loss of compression.

So does the engine use oil ,

or does it need new spark plugs and to find the reason for the coolant loss ,

maybe that is the water pump, due to wear and failure.

All the best with it, but its going to be difficult without a Warranty.

VW / Skoda know all the issues, as compiled here, they know why they happened, VW Failings.

They Discontinued the CAVE engine because of Fundamental Failings and Revised and introduced improvements.

Maybe you need legal advice and to pursue Skoda / VW

Cylinder three is massively down on compression and the chap I took it to had a career at VW before going independent but that was a few years ago.

Thanks for the reply anyway mate. And in all fairness I do think I'm flogging a dead horse, but I am going to flog it all the same, Skoda are richer than me after all!!

That link doesn't work, where is the pinned post, on this part of the forum?

Link works now.

Its just to show the possible issues but you know them.

There is a Pinned Thread up top.

But written by a non tech that does not have a Twincharger.

But he compiled most of the relevant stuff with only a few errors from lack of experience of them.

There is a 36 page thread,

Threads covering the members with failed and replaced engines.

Even a thread on Replaced Engines needing replaced.

A solicitor can have Skoda / VW assume the position, they do not want a case in court in England / Wales or Scotland or Northern Ireland.

An Independent Engineers Report published and a Court Judgement will cost them more than the thousands

they have paid out hundreds of times now in the UK.

Good Luck.

Still fighting this out with Skoda but not looking promising!!

Has anyone on here had to go down the route of privately arranging the engine replacement? Cheapest company i have found so far was just under 2k (replacement engine+labour) but upon further investigation I found out that particular company was featured on Watchdog recently so that was a definite no no!!

Really struggling to find anyone who can source the engine.

That will be because the Engine will have to come from a car being Broken, maybe crashed, and no damage to the Engine in the Accident.

Then it will need to be a Non Oil User in the first place.

Or you are a few grand lighter and no better off.

A New Base Engine can be bought, and maybe Skoda / VW will give a discount on that.

A New Base Engine Purchased from Skoda / VW will have a 2 year warranty on it.

I would think you might be better seeing a Volkswagen / Skoda Independent that can be trusted and having the engine you have rebuilt with

new Pistons and Rings, bearings etc, as the earliest cars were having done in 2011 by Skoda / VW.

That is if they were sure the head was OK.

Otherwise you are looking at £3,500 plus for a New / Refurnished Base Engine & fitting.

You had best continue Discussions with Skoda UK HQ in MK and see if they can assist with the Supply of an Engine

new or Reburbished.

2 Briskoda Members have written off vRS recently, or at least seriously damaged them,

no idea where their cars went, repaired, Salvage through Insurance or broken.

Maybe anyone that know of a good engine available can post or PM you.

Thanks your help again mate, your like an oracle around these parts!!

I have seen the name Alistair Stewart banded around a couple of times, is he possibly the go to guy for the definitive answer? Just wondering if anyone has any contact details for him, i'm sure I saw an email address somewhere at one point?

See the Pinned thread at the top of the page posted by vxh26.

Contact Details there, you might get replies from some of Alasdair Stewarts team.

Symptoms to me sound like its a head gasket problem...if the gaskets away then itl give you lower compression while allowing the oil and coolant to pass into the cylynder and be burnt off

It's unfair, but I suspect the lack of official Skoda service history will be a major stumbling block getting anything out of Skoda. Good luck with it though OP!

Yeah going through the palaver of that at the mo Teebs!! Emailed Alistair Stewart @ Skoda yesterday so just awaiting some sort of response from his people. No doubt it'll be a big fat NO, but I can pray right?...

Good luck with it OP! Let us know how you get on.

If you manage to get something out of Skoda without the service history, it might give me some hope for the future!

Haha my bad, I got it right on the email so that's the most important thing, we shall see what he comes back with!!...

sounds to me like a head gasket problem coolant should not be going missing!!!

also without a spark plug being chewed around your engine or a piston being destroyed or a ring being worn a new head gasket and bobs your uncle, they could also put uprated oil squirters in while they are at it and fix the cave once and for all

Or maybe the bearings are gone, maybe the water pump, maybe the coolant drop was just a leaking hose.

but as it is a proper report after a strip down is required.  Just so that we / you knows what 'kaput' meant.

thomasaspin,

your engine got new Oil Spray Jets, but then the New engine did you not?  How many miles was on your engine?

You had no tip off a spark plug, or a cylinder head or CH gasket gone.
