Rusty Wiper Arms ?

Featured Replies

Ok, i have a 20,000 mile, 2010 1.6CR Elegance which is only washed with a lambswool mitt, has never seen a car wash and has been serviced every year within an inch of its life (non skoda)..... the two wiper arms are peeling and rusting very obviously where they are bolted to the bodywork.... not very good for a 5 year old car with very low miles. In comparision we also have a 2006 1.9TDI Elegance (same colour actually:)) which again has done low miles and is very well looked after.... its wiper blades are perfect, no rust at all ? Both cars have been owned from close to new. So do you think a visit to a dealer and a claim to Skoda for the Mk2 would be of use ?

Yip, that is a common thing with the Wiper arms on Fabia Mk2's

Quite bad corrosion on them.  Not on all obviously, but then Skoda Suppliers are very hit or miss.

Can't see they would be expensive , nor that Škoda would pay

Expensive enough.

Must remember tomorrow to give them a sand down, put some rust inhibitor on and paint them Satin Black.    Again!

Why is the quality of the Mk2 blades so bad but the Mk1 ok ?

The Volkswagen Group as the parent company and their suppliers and requirement for cheap components and lack of

quality control and lack of care about corrosion on parts not covered by Warranty.

ie Rear Brake Drum Exterior, Exhaust Hanger Brackets etc.

Vorsprung Durch Technik.    'That will do the job for 3 years, maybe!'.

Oh dear . . . we are back to that are we

What is the real story then vxh26,  is all well with Skoda & VW ?

Quality parts only used, and quality finishes against corrosion?

Never sourcing wrong or inferior parts like Plugs, Injectors, Pistons, Rings, Chains, Tensioners, Ball Joints, Steering racks.  etc,

or Parts that just are going to be looking terrible cosmetically very soon after the car has to be used in the environment

like wheels, brake drums, wiper arms,  Paint work on Yeti models etc ?

Are you back supporting the Volkswagen Group but not so much as you buy their products?

Got one bubbling up, the other is fine. They are though, considered service parts or consumables. It is often said wiper arms may lose tension over time and need replacing, just like wiper blades, though with much less frequency.

Due to this nature, I find it inconceivable that ANY car manufacturer would zinc dip them and paint them to such a high specification so as to be covered by a warranty or to outlive the vehicle!

That said, I think if you purchase genuine parts, from Skoda dealers, they WILL actually have a two year warranty anyway! I recently had a new brake light switch and that has. (I'll mention that in a thread regarding the ESP system)...

Oh dear . . . we are back to that are we

Cue another round of George v Vxh....

I really think you 2 oughta settle things once and for all ...Jeremy Kyle anybody? :)

The thing is, if he came forward and says if he works for VW, or has some Volkswagen Group car and has an actual interest or if he is just going to try and constantly dig at me criticising Skoda & the Volkswagen Group.

PS

Wiper mounting part of the arms on my car prepared and painted this morning.

Simple quick job.

Much older cars including VW's / Skodas sitting around with original arms are corrosion free.

Yeah, my wiper arms are fine and my Fabia Mk2 1.6 tiptronic is over 6 years old now. It lived by the sea (literally almost on the beach) for the first 3 years of it's life. My Fabia Mk2 diesel was fine too and that was also 5 years old when I got rid. No sign of rust on the wiper arms. As goneoffskion1 is saying, quality might vary slightly from time to time. That's what happens in the motor industry from time to time and is not limited to Skoda. I had a 2 year old corsa as a courtesy car and that had rusty everything and it had just 20k on the clock.

Thanks for the info, i will give Skoda a go and if not then go down the rust treatment and the spray paint route.
