Gearbox Replacement?

Featured Replies

Got a strange one here, a bit of a story, so bear with me...

I got a letter from the local Skoda dealer that as my car is out of warranty, they would give me a complimentary "peace of mind" check. Good idea, I think, as I'd been wondering whether to get an independent specialist to look over everything so I had some ammunition if there were any issues, and Skoda Oz wouldn't come to the party... Not that I've had any problems with this dealer as I get services through them, and they agreed to get the oil jets done under warranty earlier this year.

Anyway, when I dropped the car off this morning, they asked if I had any specific issues, which the answer was "not really, but can you check the gearbox as I can't really tell if it feels as it should, given it may have gone 'off' over time without me noticing". I didn't think any more of this, but was surprised when I went to get the car that they thought it had a bit of a shudder when shifting. What was more, not only had they decided it needed new clutch packs and mechatronics, but they had already ordered them, since the car was still under warranty and it stopped arguments in the soon after warranty expiration period.

I thought, if anything, they might do a DSG reset, and run away laughing, sir.

Now you would think I should be jumping for joy at getting a gearbox replacement, but I don't know if I really want them to pull the car apart to fix something I'm not convinced is broken. Then again, if the original is stuffed after 3 years and 45,000km, is the next one likely to last any longer? This evening, I tried the drive as slowly as possible in second gear, then half throttle boot routine, without any obvious (to me) shuddering.

What do you guys think? Get it all replaced? Try a DSG reset of my own, then see if it goes smoother?

This has flummoxed me, I have to admit. It's like going to a doctor to get a day off work, and he gives you a whole week!

Let them replace them.

This alone will give you an extended guarantee on the mechatronics and clutch packs, as they'll now have a years warranty at least on those parts they've replaced.

+1 good point

?

Was your car part of the World Wide Recall on the DQ200 DSG which was only a Service Campaign in the EU.

& a proper Service Campaign in New Zealand with new MCU's fitted.

http://skoda.co.nz/news/dsg-service-campaign

So here only Mineral Oil in to replace Synthetic Oil and a Software Update.

Best let them do the replacing of the Gearbox.,

and tell them you want an Extended Warranty on the DSG, Engine & whole car as a gesture.

When under Manufacturers Warranty the parts replaced under warranty were only for the length of the Warranty left on the car.

Where a Warranty Company or the owner bought and paid for parts in the EU the parts have a 2 Year Warranty.

In your case out of Warranty it is not a gesture from Skoda Australia or Volkswagen World Wide,

hopefully it is them accepting the actions taken up to now have not been very good enough with something

that is 'Safety Critical', like when there can be Power Cut Outs and loss of drive.

Vorsprung Durch Technik.

'Honesty in Engineering',

and once caught cheating in the USA on Emissions VW might be learning that honesty is the best policy.

agreed, let 'em do it, call it a nice mid life "service" of the gearbox :)

No, wasn't part of the recall. On the whole, I am inclined to do it than not; I'd hate to have a loss of shift/power with a semi-trailer up my Khyber.... The at least one year warranty point is a good one, too

This was the experience quite recently on my Partner vRS - July 2013 registered car, approx 25000 miles,FSH with Skoda Dealer.

So my partner , a well experienced driver of DSG7 in Fabia vRS X2,her 1st real Brown Trouser / Knicker moments in the last 3 weeks.

She does 15000 miles a year in her cars with a varied commute which total uses the DSG to the full every day.

Her first car had the very odd hiccup with the DSG - WHICH imparts the element of uncertainty in the brain. However this car (CAVE) had the engine replaced at 43000.

Current car CTHE July 2013 - didn't require the Service Campaign ,as "Correct Oil " at build. Currently at approx. 26000 miles

So Tuesday MORNING we have the DSG issues arising FOR A 3RD TIME in 3 weeks - the most concerning of which TODAY, is travelling at 60 mph in a busy main A roads, which has 32 ton trucks up your ass regularly, the car decides to go into coasting mode, out of the blue, with D7 SPANNER ALARMS ,THEN AS SLOWING DOWN D3.

Last week we were away on holiday ,so left the car at the dealers for then to investigate the previous issues.

On return home last Monday the dealer had returned the car ,with a note saying ,Master Tech couldn't re-enact the fault described (Intermittent)(but might be a Mechatonic issue may need replacing)

So as aforementioned the week began as described.

I'm sorry VW,SKODA etc. has the BROWN TROUSER MOMENTS of the Unit ever been fully resolved and I would suggest it is a SAFTY ISSUE - RECALL not a low key Service Campaign.

I wonder how many Owners have TRULY had the brown trouser moment - near miss or whatever with this DSG7 BOX.

WHAT ACTUAL SKODA - VAG history record exists, with associated corrective actions/fault correction to resolve SUCH DANGEROUS MALFUNCTIONS.

Dealers comments, well we haven't experienced many with problems.

Mechatronic UNIT now ordered on Tuesday - prior to today's event, but dealer never suggested having the vehicle in and replacing with a SAFE LOANER until fixed.

So New Mechatronic Unit has arrived at the Service Dealership, for installation by the Master Tech in the coming week. The dealer issuing a loan car under warranty.

That being said ,the multi event "Brown Trouser Moments" over 3 consecutive days, plus 2 in the previous week, has some what bashed her confidence in the DSG.

Mechatronic now replaced (2 days), Partner tells me the car is now running well but she is now away for a few days, so I won't get a chance to see the paperwork or get a drive until Tuesday.

Need to enquire about actual warranty applying on the new unit, as she forgot to ask when picking the car up.

Any idea what should apply.

I have driven the car very recently, briskly and in traffic, all now appears okay and Partner who uses it everyday on a lengthy commute say all is fine.

It is a really odd situation with the DQ200 DSG from 2009-2014 & in the Skoda Fabia vRS 2010-2014.

Some early 2010-11 DSG get the Service Campaign field actions, which you would think means Synthetic Oil was filled at the factory.

then 2012-13 do not and other 2013 on do get the Synthetic Oil changed and the Software Update,

you would think because Synthetic Oil was not filled at the Factory.

So why was there Synthetic Used,  then for a period of time Mineral,

then it was back to Synthetic in 2013.

and the Same Cars / Engines / DSG in world regions get this an replaced ECU's.

*Or are they a little clueless on what the Factory was doing when and with what?*

& Volkswagen Australia have this, while Skoda UK tell Owners nothing.

Let them do it.

The clutch packs are about £1500 over here!

Getting the car back tomorrow. Very dumb question time... Do I simply drive as normal assuming all is fixed, or does a replacement (new?) gearbox need some sort of "running in" procedure? The dealer told tell me they are replacing mechatronics and clutch packs.

Just look, listen and feel and give it a sympathetic introduction, and enjoy how it comes with the Software at default,

and see how it learns or changes behaviour as you use it.

See if after some use and parking up, it changes its shift pattern etc.

Ask them about the latest Software that is used when they fit the new MCU and Clutch Packs.

You will be the best placed to see if you have an improvement in performance and economy,

& if not, then be sure to let Skoda Australia know.

Well, I was skeptical, but I have to say I can definitely feel the difference in the new gearbox. Makes the old dealer joke of "That's perfectly normal, sir" very sour, as I wasn't convinced anything more than a re-calibration would be required. I've heard that some of the VW dealers around Australia hardly acknowledge blatant shuddering as faulty.

Anyway, well done Skoda Australia on coming to the party.  Just makes me all the more likely to stick with the brand down the track, especially given it's something of a gamble on a very small player in the Australian market. :sun:
