vehicle recall

Featured Replies

And, but, also  :D

All MkIIIs are MQB platform hence are EA288 engines not EA189 so pointless waste of time checking!

No MK3 Octavia's or Superbs are affected

So my Dealer told me

Mine's fine, as Matt Pezz says Mk.3 Octavias have the EA288 engine

How do we know that the EA288 engine does not have some secret software as well that has not been discovered.  They kept the other software a secret for so long.

Its because the current EU test criteria dont force the testing of vehicles in real world conditions (under load, with ancileries like AC and other power draw items on).....its well known that few cars emit the low amount of NOx in real world testing that they do in lab tests.....as far as EU testing is concerned they have still passed.

Stricter testing is to be introduced that will mean manufacturers will have to make their vehicles comply in real world conditions but were not there yet.

Exactly what Pipsy said.

EU emissions tests are a standard driving profile, run by all manufacturers on a rolling road.

There are no requirements for "real world" emissions (just like there are no requirements for real world fuel economy ;) ).

Any recall in europe will purely be to remove part of the software which was used in the US.

The part all of the sensationalist tabloids are ignoring is the fundamental difference between the engines in the US.

VAG sold engines without N0x after-treatment while all other manufacturers have it.

In europe there are no real differences between VAG engines and Ford, BMW, Peugeot etc therefore no real reason to "cheat" any emissions tests.

Everyone saying the new engines are compliant may need to read this.

For those that can't be bothered this is research on the NEW engines. So this recall may not effect you, but it doesn't mean a future one won't.

Just like everyone in europe will get €3000 "compensation" & 99% of VAG diesel purchases were made because people thought they were "saving the plant"...

The fact that todays most newsworthy story for the DailyMail is the scientology wedding of Tom Cruises daughter & some bint from Towie should tell you a lot about their quality of reporting.

Yep what this boils down to is that the EA189 motor without SCR tech in any size of car would never have been able to meet the 31mg/km Californian state requirement for NOx.

VAG made the wrong call deciding to skimp on employing SCR on the earlier Jetta and Mk6 Golf vehicles and decided to control it via software for the emissions testing in a very cloak and dagger fashion.

Here it will amount to engines with the defeat software having their ECUs relashed with amended software to rid of the defeat device and likely nothing more as Ive no doubt the engines met EU5 test criteria in their current state.

In the US, they'll likely be made to retrofir SCR to the affected vehicles...ironically the action they should have taken but avoided when launching these vehicles in the US.

One thing I cannot stand is press spin, lots of misinformation and things being taken out of context. Us guys with newer vehicles have little or nothing to worry about....even our EA189 compadres on the Mk2 forum shouldnt be sweating it too badly. If anything its not as bad as the VOSA 170 PD injector scandal that was rife a few years back.....that issue actually could have (and may have) killed people (engine stopping dead at speed due to flawed injector design).

.........and caused even more problems after having the Injectors replaced as the new ones caused no end of starting problems. Just ask Silver 1011

I have 3 Octy Mk2's on fleet which are affected.

Two of which I am waiting to sell .

Not a fan of daily mail myself, it just popped up in my news feed so took a read. The point is though people keep claiming that the EU6 engines are fine. They're only fine in that they haven't been caught cheating with those yet. Its why all the other manufacturers stayed quiet as its going to come out the wood work at some point.

The real issue is a none issue for customers unless they want to do the whole PPI rubbish. Loads of people have had PPI, but as the banks have to prove it wasn't mis-sold (impossible in majority of cases) people take advantage. I didn't buy my current Diesel (yes it is effected) because of the emissions. I mistakenly thought it would make a big enough family car and had good fuel economy and had all the toys as standard as the Mk 3 was coning out.

How many people are going to claim they were mis sold thee cars whilst similarly not actually giving a rats ass! Cue VW and other ca manufacturers potentially losing billions and then passing on the costs to the future buyers in one way or another.

Didn't take it that way so no apology needed.

I despise most papers, but there are occasionally odd key pieces of info even if the rest is garbage.

Like others I almost didn't read this just because of where it was from.   However it is pretty interesting, if (big question with the DM)  the article is accurate then there is research that shows that VAG cars with the defeat software are putting out less emissions than other comparable cars.  The implication is that other manufacturers must be doing something to game the emission testing process.

Here in Australia of course we trail the world by having no real emissions requirements.  Saw the relevant minister on TV today being very careful in what laws might have been broke here.   Looks like it will be false advertising.
