Failed power steering pump.

I'm looking for a little bit of help as I am not very technical.

About a week ago I took my 2011 vrs fabia for a winter check, the next day I had a hole in the radiator £400 later I had a new radiator.

The 3 days after that my power steering g light comes on and the steering is very heavy.

After 2 days at skoda I am told that its the power steering pump that has failed and I will need to order a new one from skoda in Germany.

Has anyone else had a similar issue as I am starting to wonder if this diagnosis is correct.

Steering pumps can fail.

Someone being a bit careless replacing the radiator could be the reason you now need a new Steering Pump.

 

So how did you hole the radiator, was it something you hit that might have damaged the steering pump?

Who was doing the Winter Check, was it a Main Dealer, a Skoda Main Dealer,

and was your car out for a Road Test, and do you trust them, and trust the diagnosis on the Steering Pump?

The winter check was done at the main dealers.

I only drove the car a few miles into norwich on main roads before the radiator failed.

It seems so strange to have a catalogue of issues within only a few days of a winter check and then theain dealer fixing the radiator.

I can't be sure about the pump diagnosis. If I honest it feels to much of a condense that this is all happening within hours of the last fault.

Maybe best to talk over the issue with the Workshop Manager or Master Tech in the presence of the Dealer Principal.

Ask if they want to consider that the Pump Failure has anything to do with anything a Technician has been doing on your car.

 

Maybe pure coincidence and bad luck.

 

How many miles on the car, and has it the Original Engine?

The car has 88k and is on the original engine.

Always looked after by the main dealer and has never missed a beat.

So just a Coolant Ratio check should have been getting done along with the other winter check items.

 

Did they show you the Radiator that was removed?

How often have you had the Spark Plugs replaced.?

No they didn't show me, they had the car for 4 days Inc sat and sun then called me and told me it was ready to collect.

Not much you can do other than ask to see the radiator if still there waiting to be sent off.

 

& speak with the Dealer Principal on the failure of the steering pump,

just incase the person that worked on your car has had past issues. 

(Incidents with customers cars.)

Thanks for all your advice, I think tomorrow I am going to go down and have a chat with them.

 

This is a difficult position I have never had these problems one after another with any car. The dealership also failed to set my Tyre sensors in the summer, I took the car back and they "fixed" the sensors. The next day going down the motorway the sensors went off again.

 

Im stuck to be honest I need the car but I am not accepting that all these problems are not in anyway connected.

There are no Tyre Sensors really with the TPMS.

When you check and adjust your tyre pressures or check the System you just press the Button near the Hand Brake and set it.

(or check it works.)

odd, I was told the sensors were in the valve.

 

i did reset the system a few times, that why I took it back, more about making sure I had done it correctly.

 

I'm starting to worry just how road worthy my car has been when it has left the dealer, including small things such as engine oil spilt down the side of the engine and not cleaned off.

Is it Robinsons Skoda you are using?

yes, and generally the customer service is second to non, but im not sure what has happened recently

Have they quoted you a price for the work? New pumps can be £600+ then labour on top!

If you were feeling up to it and have the tools you could change the pump yourself?

I changed the pump on my Mk1 and was relatively easy to do, certainly saved me a lot of money on labour

Could the battery have been very low when you first had the Steering Warning Light.

Have a look at page 142 of the owners manual if you have not already.

Although it sounds iffy, sometimes things just DO go wrong at the same time! Had a replacement turbo, got car back, day later the engine failed as the oil pump chain gave up the ghost!  Both replaced for free under warranty but **** happens!

 

Nearly three years later, had cam shaft replaced, non dealer guy said they usually fail after oil shortage so my guess was the damage was done earlier, taking three years to show up as wear on crank lobes.
