Spare wheel & hockey puck jacking pads

Featured Replies

Having just got a 2010 Fabia Ive been meaning to get prepared in case I get a breakdown!

The car didnt come with a spare wheel so as a temporary measure Ive put in the old space saver from my Mk3 Golf Gti (5 x 100 PCD  3,5JX15H2 ET38) - Would this be ok?

I think the centre bore size is the same too, just wasnt sure of the offset

I the skoda jack I need looks a similar profile to the Mk3 Golf one too - can anyone confirm this

Also Ive read about owners using the Hockey Puck pads to protect the pinched edge when jacking with a trolley jack or 2 post lift.

Theres various pucks available with a groove in them already - what size groove is best?  (8mm wide 10mm deep, 10mm wide 10mm deep,  14mm wide 15mm deep, 8mm wide 3mm deep)

Thanks for any advice

Mike

For the record, I had them on my wife's late 2002 9N Polo for about 10 years, and using them saved a lot of problems and meant lifting the car was easy, though I am lucky and have two trolley jacks so lift one side at a time (using both hands!!).  When my wife got a new Polo in August, these were some of the first things I fitted to it, you can still order them in via a dealer and the latest models of these cars can still be fitted with them.

Edit:- I've read that these pucs can split, sounds/looks like they might.  I can't help with the temp spare wheel offset though.

Very glad to have read this. Going to email the guys behind the "Skoda Car Parts" link at the top of the page to see if they can offer a good price on a set of these.

I've used hockey pucks without incident for a while, but extra places to put jacks/stands is never a bad thing.

Will they fit a Fabia? It's not mentioned, and the thread linked to is for an Octavia.

Assuming this is the kit at Awesome GTI

Oh yes, they are safest used on Fabia/Polo/Ibiza maybe okay used on Octavia/Golf/Leon but pushing the boundary if used on Superb/Passat as these cars are far too heavy to support on these pads.

One thing about having a car with them fitted is, when you come to jack it up, it is just a case of sliding the trolley jack(s) under the car and locating one of these very obvious pads which will sit neatly within the average DIYer trolley jack saddle.

I've got a couple of sets of old average quality axle stands, and I made up some profiled wooden blocks that sit in the "vee" of the axle stands and are located by M10 cap headed bolts that are counter sunk into the wooden blocks.  Actually over time I justified, when I looked under my newly acquired Audi S4 and found that there are no obvious places to place jacks/stands, buying Jackstand jacking blocks in a group buy on the Porsche owners website (joined only to take part in this group buy) - they are expensive but excellent, I went for broke and bought 2 pairs, so can get any of my cars up on these Jackstands by using a couple of suitable Sealey trolley jacks in no time at all.

Though as you can see, I do tend to trust my trolley jacks and wooden blocks, so most of the time I stick with them for quick wheel changes!

Having seen front springs break at half height with no warning, I've moved away from using wooden ramps if I plan to be under the car for a long period my myself!!

Four 8N0 803 855 @ £3.72 + VAT each and four 8N0 804 583 @ £1.96 + VAT each received this morning from Michael. Total cost £27 and a few pennies delivered.  This was part of a bigger order, but I suspect you may get the same price for just them, check with Michael. Not sure whether Awesome charge for delivery, if not, pricing is identical.
