Skoda Press Release:

Continued high demand: ŠKODA expands YETI capacities

14.9.2016 | category: Company

› ŠKODA increases capacity for YETI production due to high demand

› The Czech manufacturer entered the SUV segment with the ŠKODA Yeti in 2009, creating a global success model

› More than 580,000 of the compact SUV sold

Mladá Boleslav, 14 September 2016 – While the Czech automaker has launched their broad SUV campaign with the recently presented ŠKODA KODIAQ, the ŠKODA YETI – the brand’s first SUV – is enjoying an unexpected rise in popularity in its seventh production year. Since its debut in 2009, the ŠKODA YETI has been one of the most successful compact SUVs ever. In total, the manufacturer has delivered more than 580,000 ŠKODA YETIs to customers worldwide. Due to high demand, ŠKODA is currently expanding the capacity for the production of the compact SUV.

“We are delighted to be able to deliver as many ŠKODA YETI to our customers in Europe as they wish,” says Michael Oeljeklaus, ŠKODA Board Member for Production and Logistics. “By using the production capacities of another European plant within our international production network, we can respond satisfactorily to the high demand.”

The compact SUV is currently produced at four plants: In addition to Kvasiny in ŠKODA’s home country the Czech Republic, the model is manufactured at Solomonovo (Ukraine), Nizhniy Novgorod (Russia), Öskemen / Ust Kamenogorsk (Kazakhstan) and Anting (China). In order to meet the high demand for the YETI models in Europe, ŠKODA is utilizing the additional production capacities at the Nizhniy Novgorod plant. The ŠKODA YETI has been produced here since 2012 alongside the ŠKODA OCTAVIA. Production in Nizhny Novgorod is carried out in partnership with the Volkswagen Group Russia and the Russian automobile manufacturer GAZ Group.

ŠKODA entered the compact-SUV segment with the YETI model series in 2009. In Europe, the award-winning ŠKODA Yeti is one of the best-selling SUVs in its class and underlines the all-wheel-drive competence of the Czech brand.

Its distinctive design language, high functionality, extremely generous interior space yet compact external dimensions and an excellent value for money distinguish the Czech all-rounder. In addition, the model features robust off-road capabilities and top safety: On its debut, the independent Euro NCAP organization (New Car Assessment Programme) awarded the ŠKODA YETI the highest rating of five stars for occupant safety.

The series has been available in two versions since 2013: The elegant ŠKODA YETI is the crossover for the city; the adventurous ŠKODA YETI Outdoor emphasises its suitability for rough terrain with its particularly powerful off-road elements. Features include bumper with integrated underride guard and silver coloured door mirrors; the side panels and door sills are finished in black plastic for the ŠKODA YETI Outdoor. Both versions feature newly designed front and rear sections, fresh interiors, new 'Simply Clever' ideas, highest functionality and extended engine/transmission combinations. All available engines and transmissions, as well as front and all-wheel drive are available for both variants.

ŠKODA further enhanced the model series in mid-2015, equipping the popular SUV with five new, more powerful engines. They meet the requirements of the EU-6 emission standard across the board. Consumption and CO2 emissions have been reduced at the top by around 20 percent. Furthermore, the ŠKODA YETI and ŠKODA YETI Outdoor come with an even more extensive range of standard equipment and the latest generation of music and infotainment systems.

More than 580,000 ŠKODA YETIs have been sold to customers around the world to date. In 2015 alone, ŠKODA delivered around 99,500 YETI models. Between January and August 2016, approximately 61,700 customers worldwide opted for a vehicle in this series.

I thought this was about an announcement that due to increased sales they were ramping up production.

Looks like quite a drop to me, projects to a drop in 2016 sales of about 17,000 not an increase needing more production capacity!!!

Maybe they have a huge delivery queue for the near future. They seem to speak only about delivered quantities not about placed orders. Who knows, at the beginning of the year people were saying "I'm waiting for the Kodiaq", then after its launch "Better place an order for an Yeti now".

If 61,700 were built Jan to Aug, which is 8 months if inclusive of the full month of August, and sales through the year are linear for Europe, that would mean projected sales for 2016 of just over 92.5k, so about 7k down on 2015. If it doesn't include August, then it would be 12/7 x 61,700 = 105.7k units. Either way, not a massive difference from the 2015 figures.

I wonder if this is a sugar coating of Skoda's intention to keep the existing Yeti in production for some time, in the Eastern Europe and China markets, and as suggested above free up production space in Kvasiny for newer models. That would give them the luxury of being able to supply new-build Yetis to Western Europe right up to the introduction of the new model, by switching production to the Ukraine site and simultaneously refitting the Czech plant.

The figures published for World Wide production or is that sales do not seem to tally with it being 'One of the most successful compact SUV's ever'.

If Skoda mean by number produced and sold world wide by its seventh year of production'.

I wonder if they can give figures for other manufacturers compact SUV's!

Well that is the most Procrastinated statement i have ever read so far.

All the relevant and useful information was contained in the very last 2 paragraphs, the rest of it looks like it was a copy / paste from old releases along with a section out of the sales brochure.

According to sales figures of 2013, 2014, and 2015 there is not a huge increase in demand, though Yeti seemed to be a top 5 challenger within those years according to the linked source.

The announcement may be due to the transition on type of manufacture from existing model to a new one in the main manifacturing plant - Kvazny, whereas, there is no mentioning of any capacity change for manufacturing of the existing Yeti in the main plant according to the official statement.

Brilliant, thanks for those links.

So in the Press Release Skoda Delivered 99,500 Yeti in 2015.

That will have been the drive to pass the Million cars sold in 2015 possibly.

The thing is the Produce, Deliver and sometime register, but as to selling that is only to VW Finance who already own the cars until they really are sold anyway.

Or as it is the Financial Institutions & Pension Funds and National Investments loaning the VW Group money own them.

There are statistics and figures on car sales but really what matters is where a Dealer or Manufacturer sells cars for cash money.

Often that is sales as Used cars, Management / Demonstrators / Lease etc.

New cars sold to lease companies are sales, selling to your own Lease / Finance company is just smoke and mirrors and good for taxes and confusing taxation around the world.

As to Customers opting for 61,700 Yeti in 2016 between January & August, that can quite easily be Skoda / VW dispatching lots of Yeti to Dealerships who are customers and vehicles being pre-registered.

After all the VW Group are always putting out Press Releases saying how well sales are holding up, and the Defeat Device Scandal has not had an affect on sales.  Or Residuals,  but then the cars being returned to dealers are often Owned by the VW Group so they control residuals.

All of what you say is probably true, however, its exactly what all the other car manufactures do.  So the reality is comparing 'figures' published by each manufacturer against each other.  They all spin the numbers and invest in teams just to do that.

@Kerem - that's a great site. Thanks for posting the links.

Judging by this page, European sales of the Yeti have been a model of consistency. Considering the competition it faces from newer models, sales are holding up well. I wonder how many of those sales are repeat purchases? Sales figures for the Quashqai are borne out by what I see in my part of the UK. It is the new Mondeo/BMW 3 series. Having said that, Yetis seem very prolific too!

Interesting comment here about a lengthened wheelbase for the Chinese Yeti.
