Where would I stand on getting engine replaced in a 2011 vrs

Featured Replies

I pick up my Vrs on Saturday. I haven't actually checked which engine it is, but say it does burn oil fast and the engine has never been replaced, where would I stand with Skoda on getting a replacement engine? It's fully serviced, only 25000 miles. Would they refuse to replace it??

I'm hoping it's not an oil burner, but it's be nice to know my options.

It'll be a CAVE. If it has a full Skoda service history and the car is standard go online and buy an extended Skoda warranty - it covers sudden and unexpected damage so probably wouldn't cover excessive oil useage - however, it should cover the engine should it go pop while driving along e.g. tip of a spark plug decides to bore into a cylinder.

So being a cave is it most Likely an oil burner? I'm new to Skoda

Have you made any enquiries as to the car's history e.g. warranty work? It doesn't mean it's likely to be an oil burner - most aren't but unfortunately a significant minority are - estimates seem to vary between 20% and 30% (although some of those will have had replacement engines).

It has a greater than 1 in 4 chance of using too much oil, and that is not the figure Skoda / VW give of may use 0.5 litres in 1000km (621 miles)

because that is not the acceptable amount of oil use.

Of the 1,800 CAVE engine Fabia sold in the UK the ones using too much oil is greater than 25%.

That is engines that had new rings fitted, then Oil Breather Pipe Mods % ECU updates, then Short Blocks as the replacement, or Base Engines & then Oil Spray Jets replaced.

Even replacement engines failed.

The figure is greater than 33% that failed Oil Consumption Tests or were replaced or actions taken on.

But you can help the engine with VW 502 00 Oil, Denso Spark Plugs and using Super Unleaded fuel.

A valid warranty is really rather important.

So that needs a Full Service History and no Remaps on the engine, and that is no guarantee a new engine gets fitted.

From looking at the history it's not had any warranty work done. So either the owner wasn't concerned or it didn't need any. But having 100% Skoda history I hope it's the later.

The owner owned a motorbike custom chopper shop in the town (his wife's car) so if like to think he's be all over any mechanical issues. I might pop along and go see him, see what he says.

How often should I be checking the oil??

And thanks for the info thusfar

Definitely pop along and speak to the previous owner if you can.

You dont need to check oil all the time, but to start off there is the need to check.

The previous owner should be able to say if it needed topped up occasionally.

If it was just doing short trips that is possible, and not really an issue.

You want to know where the Oil is after it has 3.6 litres of new oil in and when checked cold.

Then you know it is not overfilled, and you can check anytime & not need to do hot checks.

It would be better now to have in 5w 40 (VW502 00) rather than 5w 30 Long Life (VW504 00).

& the new spark plugs in if not changed already.

Then you are sorted, low mileage car, good purchase price, have fun.

I guess when buying a new car, especially changing marquee you'll start looking on the interweb, and that's when it goes dark...... I suppose it's to do with people take to the internet to complain about stuff more so than to praise. So it seems there are more horror story's as opposed to good owner reviews.

I guess It's all a learning curve, the fun of a new car.

When buying a used Skoda I always ring Skoda Customer services and give the the Reg Number, they can tell you all about the service history and any warranty work carried out. If there is a gap in the service history the car may have been else where for servicing as it will not show up on the Skoda system.

Sadly that seems to have changed, luck of the draw who you get at Skoda UK Customer Services or which Location maybe.

A recently joined member has had the Skoda UK answer of Data Protection, ask a Dealer, we can not tell you what was done under Service Campaign or Warranty.

Total nonsense obviously, but then you are dealing with Skoda Customer Services which is a lottery and never a guarantee of getting consistent treatment.

He PM'd me the details and I sorted most of the information for him, so yeah it's a lottery!
