Skoda Fabia 1.2 Greenline Estate - Stop Start Error

Featured Replies

Hi,

Just brought a 2011 1.2 TDI CR GreenLine II estate.  It's the first time that I've had a car with stop start technology.

When driving I either get the message 'stop start not possible' or 'stop start error'.  I gave the dealer (independent) a quick call and he said that he normally turns it off and said he wasn't sure when the system is fully active.  He thought that the engine had to be run for a while so that it's warmed up.

Would be grateful if someone could let me know if the engine needs to be at certain temperature first and possibly suggest some things I could try on a test drive.

Thanks,

Eddie

Hi Edstar.

I have the same car - 2012 year. Start stop works reliably for me and I've never felt the need to turn it off. It will work from cold and doesn't need the handbrake applied to switch the engine off.

It doesn't work under the following circumstances-

Low battery e.g. if the car has been standing for a week or so or the engine load is high (AC/ window & mirror heat etc)

When DPF is doing a regen

Not wearing seatbelts

Car not in neutral

Take the car for a nice long drive and it should switch the engine off as you roll to a stop. Mine will often cut out whilst I'm gently coming to a stop.

Hi Sam,

Thanks for the reply and the conditions in which the stop start doesn't work.

Drive home from the dealer was about 35 miles mainly on motorway or A roads - thought that might be enough to charge the battery.  Will be out in the car tomorrow so will see if there is any improvement.

Dealer got back to me after speaking to an electrician who thought that it may be a faulty switch - so as a precaution the car is booked in for next Tuesday.

Will let you know how things go.

Thanks,

Eddie

you will occasionally see that message if all the conditions are not met, my guess is battery not charged enough or is failing as it is 5 years old

one thing to note is the battery on a stop start car is a heavier duty battery so make sure you get the right one

Its an AGM battery as opposed to a standard style lead acid

Depends on model and engine, it might just be an EFB - either way there will be AGM or EFB written somewhere on the battery.

I've had my 2012 fabia greenline 2 fron new. After almost 3 years the stop start stopped working all the time. It was better in the afternoons than the mornings snd better in warm weather than cold. A new battery under warranty sirted it out. The same thing is happening again and so I guess I need another new battery. This money saving feature is working out expensive and so I shall just live without it.

I can't think why I would want it working, very annoying, gets switched off in any car I drive with it. Silly idea "imo"....premature wear on engine, battery , starter....for what ? not much of a saving........"if" any...
