Eco Tyre Pressures OR Not

Featured Replies

Fuel flap gives 2.5 bar as an Eco tyre pressure option for my 205/55/16 tyred Combi 1.4l TSI.

Anyone tried this without wearing the centre tread out first? My first 42mpg tankful has been at 2.3bar.

Got a long trip coming up soon.

Over many sets of tyres on my previous Skoda I always aimed to get an even wear across the whole width.

2.5 bar should give pretty much the best compromise for economy wear and safety...comfort might suffer a bit but might be ok with 16 inchers.

Any more might affect wear and road holding in the wet.

Don't go to the extremes some hyper milers go to.

Eco tyre pressures are higher which IMHO will lead to a harder ride and probably reduced contact patch, for those reasons I will never use them.

Thanks for your opinions. But has anyone actually tried it?

Just used a foot pump to go from 2.3bar to 2.5bar which was good exercise at 90 strokes per tyre. :nerd:

I don't work in bars but 36 psi is not really that excessive. I run my 17 inch wheels at that and wear is pretty even.

Just watch the tyre pressure indicator on the pump is accurate. Check with a decent pencil pressure gauge.

Hope you remembered to reset the TPMS.

TPMS re-set. And pressures  checked with a separate screw- on dial gauge. The push- on type always seem to develop a habit of deflating my tyres.

I tried the eco tyre pressures for a bit. Found the ride became jiggly, made my daughters child seat rattle a lot in the back. Also didn't really notice any difference in economy, maybe a tiny amount better.

Mine was delivered with the Eco tyre pressures set, however on my first check after a week or so, I reduced them down to the standard setting for comparison and prefer the ride as a result. Economy is late 50's early 60's mpg so happy on that front, therefore they'll be staying on the standard setting.

On my previous MkII I drove quite fast on curvy highways about 180Tmeters with 2.5+ bars on my tyres. The garage congratulated with me for the evenness (hope the English is understandable) of the consumption.

So for me it's a go!

No, questo non ha alcun senso.

Eco tyre pressure used for a long 900 mile break on motorway and touring on country roads. Felt fine and passengers commented how comfortable the car felt. A success so far.

If you were loaded with gear and passengers for your trips then you Eco pressures may have just been standard for the weight being carried, unless you compensated for that?

If I am carrying a load in the back then I have to run about 40 psi in the rears, which is then a bit uncomfortable when unloaded so I have to knock back to my standard 36psi. Any lower pressure and I get a bit of the weird pressure/boom which I think has developed as the tyres have worn.

The wife is totally oblivious to it all.

I ran eco on my 19" for a while at 3bar (43.5Psi!) and it was...firm! Did get real crashy on some surfaces but tyre noise did seem reduced. Can't say I noticed any improvement in economy.

Went back down to standard 2.7bar/39,5psi and am more comfortable there.

The eco pressure is 2.5bar , 36psi, on 205/55/16 and is suitable for anything but fully laden according to fuel flap. Car ride was fine with me and luggage or with two passengers and no luggage.

Tyres Michelin Energy + were running cool and had no hand detectable warming as found with normal tyres. So low hysteresis rubber.

I was running 2.5 bar on my summers (16 inch) now up around 2.8 on the winters - the ride is fine.

Oh, and the wear pattern was fine on the first service.

Just checked my eco pressures after one month. No leakage measured (my oxygen molecules must be asleep) and passengers still comment on the cars quietness.

Good.

You must have them filled with the Special Skoda Heavy Air, available at selected outlets.

Did you check them after 1 month at the exact same ambient temp as when first checked?

"Best" tyre pressures for even wear will depend on the make of tyres fitted anyway.

And the same barometric pressure? :>)

Happy new year.
