Windscreen washer fluid

Featured Replies

Looking for recommendation for best additive to get rid of traffic film. Years ago used sachets of Clearalex but no loner appears to be available.

These days I'd say that they're all much of a muchness, so buy whatever your local garage/Halfrauds sells.

From Asda.

+1 for Prestone stuff, I stock up when it's on offer in Costco.

5l of Lidl concentrate. If still available.

am still giving away 'PRESTONE' to people i do not really like.  (sorry to anyone that got it...)

I bought lots of it at clearance price in Tesco & ASDA a couple of winters ago.

What a load of crap.

Maybe the colour of the Prestone is the difference. The Costco stuff is blue and works a treat, nice smear free clean windscreen, and it doesn't freeze.

Cheers i will give it a try.

Usually i have the good LIDL stuff but missed it this year, so stick mostly with ASDA Concentrate & VODKA.

(Just drink the Vodka when not driving obviously.)

yes me too - maybe it just shows our age !!

use prestone concentrate now - wait till its on offer at tesco

Some Vodka might be cheaper than screenwash, probably why Russians use it as screenwash.

I always found the VW wash to be the best. However, recently I've used started using Quantum screenwash from TPS. Rated to -30c, made for fanjets and is less than a fiver for 5l.

Works great and cheaper than the VW stuff for a lot more.

I used cheaper stuff in the past on our other Skoda's with fan jets. They ended up getting blocked as we live in a hard water area. Since changing to the VW stuff I've never had a problem.

-15 to -30 and staying liquid is fantastic,

even spraying out onto the windscreen, freezing solid when on the screen is a bit useless sadly as are the type of wipers that also freeze solid.

Halfords Berry screenwash is lovely, £4.24 for 5L with 15% discount code (MOTOR15). Nice berry scent through the vents and cleans well. Out of the box it's good for -10c (not sure how cold it gets in your location in the peak of winter), I diluted mine down as it never really drops below -5c.

Stocked up with 5 bottles of the stuff last winter when it was £2.24 for 5L! Just as well since the headlight washers drain the stuff....

I use TPS Quantum as well. Also I only put rainwater into washer bottle from garden rain butt to avoid limescale.  As mentioned, the powdered Clearalex was very good, but no longer available. I keep a strong solution of washingup liquid in the car to spray on the screen when the washer fluid fails to clear. This keeps it clean for a time.

I usually have this fruity stuff too, but my good lady doesn't like the smell.  I'm trying the Green flavour now after the Red.

Running 50:50 at present though may need it stronger in January.

.......and Screenwash as Vodka

Have tried the liquid Clearalex but no better than anything else. Have also tried Prestone and Halfords Pine but didn't find them terrific. Headlamp washers certainly go through the liquid. I used to top up once a month now virtually weekly.

I used to swear by the Sonax 1:100 concentrate bottles.

Now use the Halfords -10 range and can't say as I notice much difference.

I bought a six pack of the vw stuff from hortons skoda, apparently with fan jets they recommend the vw stuff as some products block the jets or partially block them. There will be other stuff out the that does the same job maybe finding the company who make it for vw.

I had the new car bug when i bought it, it is steep but its realy good stuff.

The first Skoda we bought was a mk1 Fabia vRS. They'd used whatever in the washer tank and you could see the build up.of limescale.

The washer jet build up got so bad that one day the bit that causes the water to fan got blown out. The result was a rubbish wash pattern that didn't clear the screen properly.

£4 for a new nozzle and VW fluid later and it was fixed. Since then I've stuck with it. I've also found it does a great job of cleaning the screen properly and doesn't need a massive amount due to its rating of -70c.

As I mentioned earlier I now buy the TPS stuff as it is much cheaper but fanjet rated. <£5 for 5litres and is concentrate so mix up your own amounts.

I like this stuff too. Bought six litres from Simpsons in Preston yesterday - £30. Pity they don't do it in 5 or 10 litre containers. Coming oop t'north on Wednesday used a full reservoir but luckily not too much as I still had it at the summer dilute recommendation. Strengthened the mix this top up.

Went to my dealer yesterday with inefficient wipers and smeary screen and was told that my washer fluid was too concentrated. What a load of *******s. I suggested it needed new wiper blades even though the car is only six months old but was told "no it's your fluid" Since owning the car I have used many different fluids Tesco,Halfords Prestone etc and found them all much of a muchness. I bought a new set of blades at my own expense ( wow they're not cheap) and guess what ..... problem solved. Moral of the story if your screen smears suspect the blades and don't blame the fluid.
