Newbie: All Terrain Tyres?

Featured Replies

Hi everyone!

Took delivery of our 2012 Yeti DSG 4x4 today. What are your opinions on running with AT tyres? We do get snowed in from time to time, and I am thinking they might be better than winter tyres. But, I would like to hear what you have to say on the topic, as we are entering the time when we get snow and ice, and I need to try and sort it out soon.

Thanks for any replies in advance.

Can you legally fit 'snows' to the front axle only as an extreme option?.

I have a set of steel rims and winter tyres for my Yeti and am pleased with them.

I note on one site that "all terrain" are now advertised as an option on the new Octavia's.

The latest all terrain are I believe very good and if I'd had the option to order them on a new car I would have done so.

I think they are the way to go, unless you plan to do serious winter off roading.

Woops, I meant "ALL SEASONS"

Do you really want All Terrains and not just All Weathers, Michelin Cross Climates might do the job for you, Summer Tyres suitable for winters in the North East on the public highway unless you do need something more extreme.

The roads are either open or closed and even still Yodel deliveries get through.

AT tyres are "All Terrain" tyres and are nothing to do with snow or winter.

I think what you mean are WINTER tyres, and there are several here using various makes, although Nokian seem to get several mentions. The other option is All Season tyres, such as the Michelin Cross Climate or Goodyear's equivalent

^^^ Well kind of,

i am using Yokohama Geolandar AT/S (G012) this winter and they are performing OK in snow and as good as CrossClimates, but i would not put them on a Yeti.

Not a Winter / Snow Tyre, but many use them in snow & they work all year, good in the Wet and what comes as standard for road use with an Ariel Nomad..

(they come in black without white lettering if you choose.)

I use Yokohama AT-S (215/60-16) for summers and studded Nokian Hakka 7 for winters.
But I have actually used the AT-S through the winter a couple of time. They are good on snow, but for driving on ice in coastal areas I prefer the studded Nokians.
New, the AT-S seemed quite soft and wobbly when turning. This has improved now since they are half worn.
I am considering AT-S in 65 profile when time comes for replacement.

If you do fit A/T tyres (as distinct from all season tyres) for use all the year round, you are almost certainly going to find a considerable increase in noise at motorway speeds on dry Tarmac surfaces, and the car's handling at high summer temperatures will be less precise as the deeper tread blocks will move more. But you should experience a softer ride which some people may prefer - ie you sacrifice handling for a softer ride.

Speedsport: I found the AT-S less noisy on dry tarmac than the Dunlops the Yeti came with.  And I totally agree on your comment on handling.  It took a few weeks to get used to the somewhat wobbly ride.  This may improve as the tread blocks wears down.  Or maybe I'm just getting older and drive slowly all day long?

Hi darfash. If you are still deliberating this video might be of some use to you

I've had these for about a year now and whilst I've not had to drive in snow I've found them very acceptable in the dry and wet, I'm getting consistently better mpg and they seem less noisy than the original tyres the car came on. With 8-9000 miles on them now no obvious signs of wear so far.
