Is the 1.4 tsi (2011) a reliable engine? I know the 1.8 and 2.0 have their issues.

 

Any known issues with the 1.4?

 

Anyone have some real world mpg figures?

I've had a 1.4Tsi (122PS) since new in December 2009 (2010 model)  - no issues except the well documented diesel style racket when starting from cold but it has done this from new so it is hard to identify any new noises!

 

Mine is a CAXA engine that has a chain, but there are reports of these being noisy due to either a streched chain OR  failed tensioner OR failing camshaft adjuster.  Most of the internet documented woes on the 1.4Tsi refer to the more powerful (140PS?) unit that is both turbo and supercharged.  However, the 122PS appears not to be imune.  I think 1.4Tsi later cars had a belt but suspect 2011 may still be chain.

 

My fuel figures are here:  Fuelly  You need to change the units in the top left corner to UK. The graph and figures are all over the place since I don't always brim the tank, but the average figure should be good (43.1mpg).  I drive fairly sedately but on the other hand in a hilly area of Derbyshire.

Thank you, seen a bit of a bargain tbh. Basically ive been looking at spending 11k on a 2013-2014 1.4 tsi mk3 with around 30k miles on but i have found a mk2 for over 5k cheaper with similar mileage. Basically the difference is that its 3 years older and older shape but seems like could be worth saving the 5k tbh! 

 

Have you had any other issues at all?

Can only confirm what the other 2 guys have told you.

Had my 2011 1.4 TSI CAXA for over 2 years now and the engine has been excellent and as Mike says for such a large body car the engine pulls it along quite nicely. Mine is a manual and though i've never measured the fuel figures it appears to be very good.

I very much agree that performance it surprisingly good for the size of car and certainly condsiderably better than the 1.8 1999 Honda Accord I had before, although thay only had 4 automatic gears (torque converter). Economy showed a 25% increase over the Honda as well since it was impossible to get that over 35mpg however I drove it!  Other than servicing, the only other issue that involved the dealer was the slow reading of SD cards by the Bolero radio which was fixed for free by a firmware update back in the early days (2010/1?).

 

Returning to the diesely sound on cold start, it is appears to be worse if the car has been standing for a few days perhaps indicating some sort of oil drain back over time somewhere.  I guess many cars are routinely started every day and this could minimise the effect.

I have 2 x 1.9tdi Fabia mk1 and octy mk11 ( fl )

recently considered changing to petrol as we were looking to buy newer cars and dpf issues doesn't suit our year in year out low mileage, asked a lot of questions on here and elsewhere and came to the following conclusions

 

to replace the Fabia we ought to go for as new as possible but NOT be the first owner, maybe even look at 1.0 petrol 

 

to replace the Octavia buy the best mk11 1.4tsi we could find as there are lot of reports regarding build quality, access and headroom on the mk111 compared to our mk11 ( admittedly the mk111 is quite likely fine if not compared like for like against previous ownership of a mk 11 )

 

we decided that with no dpf issues on the 1.9tdi and both our cars thus far being relatively trouble free ( touch wood !! ) to run them both as long as feasibility possible, but both our cars are on relatively low mileage Fabia 63k and Octavia 75k, fingers crossed that year in year out running costs are lower than depreciation costs we would occur by buying newer cars, which would obviously cost the bank balance as well

 

or to sum it all up another way newer Skoda cars appear to have been built to a budget thus build quality and other issues may become problematic as they get older ( in fairness the above is probably equally relevant to most car manufacturers in today's market )

 

I have the 09 f/l - 1.4/122 caxa code engine petrol.

Everything's well except the turbo which needed to be replaced due to problem shown starting at around 80k kms and issue was the problems in revs and accelerations which were laggy/floutering...

Exact cause:  wastegate actuator malfunctioning due to jog/play in the turbine's body..

So the clapet (via its shaft) of the wastegate was not working smoothly or as it should...

Those factory KKK turbos (which probably your cars wear too) have common issue at that point (at least here in Greece what happens - not always but mostly).

A new German BorgWarner has been fitted which is wider (in-out) by 1-2mm and this would increase the sense of power/torque a little or it is said to give some 5-6 bmp over...

Now car shows 93k in the odo without any other problems at all.

Revo stage 1 has been re-programmed which peaked up the power to 155 and 250-260 N of torque plus the new turbine which is a little bigger so total 160 bhp in papers..

Also I have heard of the chain tensioner failures but technicians suggest to open and replace at latest 120k kms in order to save your car from fatal damage rather that factory which claims to replace the kit at something like 180-200 instead...!

Fuel consumption very reasonable for such a not small car and as petrol version.

The diesel sound like is nothing to worry, mine also do this from new in the winters when not having moved it for over 2-3 days..

So it drains from oil and this happens only in the start for some secs until oil goes well to lubricate all the parts all the way up the cylinders..
