Can vRS CAV engines be fixed

Recommended Posts

I'm looking at purchasing a fabia rs132(vrs) and unfortunately the large majority that i've found in Australia are CAV engines not CTE.

As the cars are about 2012/2013 they are out of the skoda warranty, i've contacted a few dealerships and they don't seem to be able to do much for me. I've read that under the warranty some of the engines were rebuilt but without the warranty I fear it would be very costly.

If I end up buying one of these cars is there any work I can get done in prevention of anything happening in the future? We have a local dealership who specialises in VW group but wanted to hear from others who may have had the same experiences as i'd love to pick one up.

Welcome to the forum.

Best look in the Fabia MK2 section and the top Pinned threads and others.

In Australia those Mk2 vRS with CAVE engines might already have had the Breather pipe / valve update, the software update, maybe the Oil Spray Jets replaced (squirters).

No need to have preventative work done if you have a twincharger without issues and they do exist.

Maybe depending on miles covered by now a new Water Pump might be required as this is needed when there is a failure with the Supercharger Magnetic Clutch.

2 belts might need replacing as well.

The whole thing is a lottery when buying a Twincharger.

So you need to use good oil, probably 5w 40 Full synthetic (vw502 00) not 5w 30 FS Long Life (vw504 00)

Super unleaded petrol, so 98 ron or higher, and better spark plugs than the OEM from SKODA/VW.

Also check the DSG World Wide recall action has been carried out on the DQ200 DSG.

Mineral Oil replacing the Synthetic Oil and a software update.

Are there any CTHE engine Fabia vRS in Australia?

You need to be as careful with any early versions of those as well as with the CAVE cars.

The Breather Mod done in Australia was the 2nd version different from that done in Europe.

There are Australian members with twinchargers that have had the 'new squirters' fitted, and new DSG fitted, but there are members of Briskoda in Australia running Stage 1 & stage 2 with CAVE engines.

I do not know of any that had 'Engine rebuilds' in Australia but i do know of those that had engines replaced with a 'Base Engine', not a Short Unit.

The Warranty just runs the lenght of the Original Manufacturers Warranty unless a Warranty Company or owner paid for a Replacement Engine or paid part of it,

then you have a 2 year Original VW Part Warranty on the engine.

I have a CAV engined vRS
I am going through the hoops with the dealer at the moment in regards to the oil usage and some DSG jerkyness (only the last 300km or so)

I have had the stage 2 fix done already (breathers and squirters) and I am still around 700ml/1000km under city/rapid driving.

I am just sick of the black soot covering the back of my car and oil spots when it's mixed with rain.

Mine is still covered under extended warranty for a whole 2 more months! (skoda factory extended)

How much are you looking at spending?

I want to get a vRS 245 Octavia Wagon when they come to Aus!

Touch wood, I have a good CAVE engine in mine.

Yes it uses oil but I think its not far off the manufacturers specs... 250-500ml every 3-4k..

I do a lot of motorway driving so I think that may contribute to how little it uses, but I'm still very wary of it, and check it probably every other day, just for peace of mind more than anything.

I love the car too much to consider getting rid...

That's well within Skoda's (admittedly generous) tolerances- 0.5l every 4K is nothing to worry about. They are great fun and very addictive - carry on enjoying  .

I have a late 2012 rs wagon with CTHE in Aus. I had the oil jets and ecu updates because of oil usage problems, under warranty. It markedly reduced oil consumption. It was using up to 700ml per 1000 kms. Since the last service the car has done almost 4000kms and I have topped up with 650ml of oil. If it was all motorway driving that figure would be near zero, but I do a lot of 10 km trips to work and back so, not too bad.

  • 1 month later...

I had the Jets and Breathers done a few months ago,

Put the oil usage from 1.84L/1000KM down to 0.84L/1000KM

The cost to the extended warranty provider was ~$2500
I had turbo seals done a few weeks earlier at a cost of ~$1200 to the warranty provider.

Each oil consumption test is also ~$200

Under boost it still makes a cloud off the line, exhaust is sooty black and so is the back of my car.

The dealer has finally started the process with Skoda to get me a full engine tear down and repair.

It's apparently a long block job.

2 Weeks, ~$9000 in parts alone

The repairs for the engine work alone is going to end up costing MORE than the car.

There are also 2 other outstanding warranty repairs that will get done at the same time that will run into a few thousand extra.

This is a vehicle with less than 80,000km

No mods, always either dealer serviced or serviced by my mechanic to the book every 10k MAX

The two services I have done are 7.5k apart.

That is just a crazy price to rebuild considering how much less a New Base Engine from the VW Group costs. (Possibly refurbished be VW but has a 2 year warranty.)

PS,

sooty exhaust is a rich running engine and a sooted up exhaust system from the Oil Burner.

A new Cat should probably have been on the ridiculous parts list to try fixing an engine that should have been in a crate back to VW and replaced.

Skoda, VW, Audi, SEAT stopped doing rebuilds in 2011 in Europe, then there were Short Units used, then that stopped and Base Units were used.

A new CAT was installed with the breather mods, it went from literal spots of oil on my tailgate to soot.

And the rebuild comes with a 2 Year/60K warranty. :D
