Cam belt or chain?

Featured Replies

Have a 2010 1.2 Fabia automatic which I think means it is a mark 2.  A 2ndhand salesman tells me it's likely to get expensive to maintain especially if it has a cam belt rather than a chain. A cam belt  is due to be changed relatively soon and I should factor in the cost when making a decision about turning the car over.

i am assuming he's trying to frighten me (I have 'woman who knows nothing about engines' on a virtual signboard).  Am I right? Or should I take this seriously.  How do I even know whether there is a cam belt or a chain?

Both the 1.2 HTP 3 cylinder and 1.2 TSI four cylinder engines use a chain to drive the camshaft.

How many miles has this 2010 car done?,

i take it the salesperson is happy to take it as a trade in saving you all the worry and getting a sale / commission.

Cam belts are around £350 to replace at Skoda anyway. Hardly "Costly" Considering their merit!

Ta everyone.  You are confirming my suspicions about the desire for a commission ...  I shall be looking for a friendly local mechanic instead of the main dealer.

The chain is weak!

Are you recommending replacing the chain and tensioner or replacing the car?

Replasing the chain every 100 000 -120 000 km!  The chain is long, single and small in 1,2 engine. In the 1,4 mpi -engine the chain is fourt time shorter and dobbel!

I have seen so many chain jump in the last!

Thats my opinion..

Well my 1.4 chain wore out by 33k miles so I'm not sure that makes it any better!

Not a common issue with the 1,800 CAVE or 1,100 CTHE 1.4 TSI Twinchargers in the UK is it, or have Skoda told you different?

What about with the 7,000 or so other Euro 5 1.4 TSI / TFSI 132-136kw Twinchargers in Ibiza, Polo or A1's in the UK, how common with those.

That make no sense! unlucky!

The chain don't jump over anyway.

The car I know hold up to 200 000 km+

Some time the chain make noise earlier but the engine don't  crash, like the other.

After 130 000 km my AWY engine the chain was god. The tensioner get to button and if have drive some more km the chain would jumped over with crash. I know many people that have that experience. To BAD.

Seems quite well documented for pre 2010 motors. I can't believe mine can be unique.

Mines a late 2010 build (60 reg) 2011 fl 1.2 tsi but has had a yearly oil change which I plan to keep up, so touch wood hopefully avoid timing chain problems. Just a question is there a specific mileage that chain should changed believe a belt is about 70k.
Vindecorder has the car as a Roomster, why?

I have never seen some change interval on these engines. I changer at 130 000 km, and i Will change again at 200 000- 220 000 km. I changed the chain on oil pump to. I Have seen the weakness on this mechanism! Planned or miss from factory?
