Major Service, are rear brakes stripped and cleaned?

Featured Replies

Can anyone confirm if the rear brakes are cleaned on a fixed price major service. It says on the Skoda site that wheels are removed and brakes checked but not exactly what is done during these checks.

No not in a £279 Main Dealer Major Service or any service.  Visual inspection only.  Maybe you have a Technician / Dealership that cares about customers safety.

Since it says on some websites, like National Fixed Pricing,

*wheels removed and brake checked.*   (No use if then it is just a report, or phone call, you need them servicing, or just a look through the hole to see the shoes, and not drums off and cleaned.)

ask what is being done, if the Service Desk staff do not know ask them to go find out for sure, they are there 5-6 days a week, they should know.

Wheels off, Brake Drums off if the car has rear brake drums. Seldom are wheels off with disc brakes unless there is maintenance being done.

You have to pay for Brake Servicing.

& you have to pay for Brake Fluid changes.  Which is why some go to Independents.

As said, it's usually a visual inspection of the discs and pads, not a full strip and clean, which would involve extra labour time.

My local garage that service my old Octavia and Panda do strip down the brakes as part of a major service. They also grease brake pipes, hanbrake cable and this year on the panda they rust proofed a few seams under the car - all really good value.

Not sure what is done with my 2014 Superb (now 51k miles) at the dealer  - I'm on a cheaper service plan & 10k intervals. thus far nothing oher than normal servicing (inc brake fluid and this time air con service) has been required. Pleased for now.........

You are all correct, thanks for replying.

Car was in for major service and MOT. I had a call from the garage saying rear brakes slightly binding and would I like them serviced, hence my question. I declined as I usually strip and clean them a couple of times each year and do it just prior to MOT along with the usual pre checks.

I had wrongly assumed wheel off and brake checks meant drum off.

I asked the garage if and when these most vital parts were checked... They are never stripped on any service. Only visually or spinning the wheel.

I can't believe how little is done by a Skoda Authorised Dealership on a major service, or any service come to that.
There was a thread on here late last year describing the horror story of my last service - it seems to have been deleted.
I know for a fact that the wheels were not removed.

I would definitely use a trusted local independent if it weren't for concerns about the VRS and my warranty.
They flush the engine, change the oil and filter, replace the plugs, remove the wheels and check the brakes, etc., etc., etc for far less than the God-awful Skoda Authorised Dealership do.
